Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

Was it a CR1 monster though (genuine question, I have no idea)? There's a distinction between use of CR as a ready reckoner and being shackled by it into only creating TOF 'balanced' encounters. I can't see how refining the usefulness of CR (either by adjusting the rating itself or tweaking...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

I think the issue here is one of approach surely? I use CR as a rough-and-ready indicator of monster strength. To the extent that monster tweakage makes that indicator more accurate I'm all for it. But I don't let CR determine encounters. I am (as I sense are you) a 'sh*t happens' fan when it...

    Recommend us a new system!

I must admit I haven't played for years myself! Playing more than one system is something that has gone out of the window with the increasing demands of real life. I just remember handfuls of d6s, teeth-chattering auto-weapon combat, car chases, teeth-chattering auto-weapon combat & intrigue...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

Yes, yes, exactly! The whole point of the old school Paladin was that you had to be nice to be everyone, you didn't get to keep the shiny, but when it came to the struggle against the legions of evildom, you kicked a*se. YMMV :)

What alternate game systems are you trying out if you don't like 4e?

It's a shame not to be playing 4e :( Was really looking forward to it. So... Pathfinder

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder - sell me

We've been using the Beta for a while now. Don't know if all this will make it to the finished product but: Channel Energy rules stop Clerics swapping out all their spells for heals and the mechanic is artfully handled. There are more HP around in general (HD have been upscaled through the...

    I love D&D!

This thread is like an encounter group! My name's Mike and I'm a dunge-aholic... Loving the D&D. 30 years and still going strong. The gift that keeps on giving. Gotta go now and listen at a door...

    Weaning Off the Sauce

This is spot on. (Though they do care if you live or die - especially you, you wonderful customer you!). I stopped giving them my money when they stopped selling stuff I liked. 4e core will be my last ever purchase - not to my taste. Good luck to all editions and all who sail in them.

    How do you determain challenges?

And conversely, players weaned on CR's or XP budgets live in a world in which every challenge they encounter (be it a combat, a steep cliff or a trapped portal) has to be 'do-able' because they know the DM is working within guidelines. That makes life far too comfortable. For me, I like the idea...

Yup. And XP awards are self-correcting.

Yup, me too. You can always fudge a little.

    The 3.5 renaissance!

That's very difficult to say. There have been a couple of polls on ENWorld that give (to me) very surprising results. Try here for a summary of one of the largest: http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/247762-changeover-poll-39.html#post4645585 Seems to break down to about 55-60%...

    4e Change of mind

I voted 1. Our group pretty much raced each other to get the new core books first. My instinct was to switch, habituated as I was after switching through all of the editions since '78. We played for a few months but found that 4e wasn't for us. It's all about personal taste but the prevailing...

My piazo problmes Forked Thread: Another Cease and Desist Letter: 4E Powercards

That's pretty much my experience exactly. I'm running Rise of the Runelords (written for 3.5) for my group (we all bought 4e core books and played for about 4 months but have reverted). I had lost my 3.5 PHB and decided to pick up a print copy of PFBeta. I let the guys create their PCs using 3.5...

Does 4e limit the scope of campaigns?

I'm loving this argument. A most entertaining read.

    Differences? What have I missed?

Perhaps. As per all 3x the Cleric is pretty much critical. I think the PF changes are just a recognition of that fact - an attempt to give Clerics their spells back and free them up to contribute. I suspect a proper 'fix' for the Cleric thing is outside Paizo's ambitions. In the two PF games...
