MERGED - "About Edition Wars" threads x9

Can the General Forum be used for General Topics instead of Edition Wars? With the recent resurgence in Edition War posts/threads & my recent longing for the "good 'ole days" of EN World, it occurred to me that I spend the majority of my EN World time in either the General Forum or the PF...

MERGED - "About Edition Wars" threads x9

I used to think the Edition Wars were a thing of the past, or at least reverting to the "Cold War" paradigm you mentioned. After all, by 2010, things were much brighter for RPG fans of all stripes than it was, or at least appeared to be, at the launch of 4e. Rather than the RPG market moving...

On the brand VS the game...

I was responding to your assertion that anything WotC branded D&D was D&D. If they take a My Pretty Pony game's rules and dress it up with D&D style art, it ain't D&D. I really don't know too many people that are picking their edition of choice and saying it's the only valid D&D edition...

On the brand VS the game...

I have to respectfully disagree, as when someone hears "D&D", 99% of people immediately think of a role-playing game. D&D the videogame, may be a form of D&D or based off its rules, but it's not D&D. D&D action figures may have a logo, but they're action figures, not D&D. Risk -- D&D Edition or...

On the brand VS the game...

For me, the brand is irrelevant. Sure, it's nice for nostalgia sake and I fondly remember sessions played using the Basic & Expert rulebooks and the original AD&D books. I made the shift to 2e but soon became dissatisfied with the system. I played a lot of RPGs before I returned to D&D with...

Pathfinder 1E If Paizo can, why can't Wizards of the Coast?

EN World has only a few rules. One of them is that you don't comment on moderation in-thread. If you have a problem or question, please take it to e-mail or PM. Thanks. ~Umbran

Pathfinder 1E If Paizo can, why can't Wizards of the Coast?

Because for several posters in this thread, the real purpose is (perhaps) one or more of the following: :) #10. Distract RPGers from the fact that Paizo has an entire business plan & multiple product lines surrounding a single fantasy world vs. WotC's use of 1-book & out & new setting every...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder and Mass Combat

Sure there were. Fields of Blood by Eden, Cry Havoc by Malhovoc (I think), Mongoose had several I believe, and Heroes of Battle by WotC. All were superior to Battlesystem, IMO, which I used heavily in my AD&D days. However, Battlesystem never integrated the PC into things very well. All of...

Metaplots - it wasn't just TSR that did them

When I think of metaplot, I always think of White Wolf as the prime offender. Shadowrun's a close 2nd. Now if we're talking really bad metaplot, TSR moves up the rankings significantly. That said, 90% of the time metaplot of any kind is annoying.

Pathfinder 1E If Paizo can, why can't Wizards of the Coast?

No analogy is going to be a perfect fit. There are few equivalents to RPGs out there. I used a computer operating system comparison, you used cars. Is it going to adequately represent every nuance of RPG game design, publishing, & play experience? Of course not. Honestly, after reading the...

Pathfinder 1E Sell me on Pathfinder!

PF improvements over 3.5: 1. Reworked skill system allows for faster character generation yet let's skill points go farther (consolidated list, bonuses to class skills). 2. Reworked core classes entice players to remain single-classed yet nothing has been taken away from multi-classing. Both...

Adamant's Tome of Secrets: How has it aged?

True, but the Fighter has Mobile Fighter, Weapon Master, & Free-hand Fighter archetypes which also provide a swashbuckler vibe. Plus, by using archetypes like Fighter (mobile fighter) & multi-class with Rogue (Swashbuckler), you get a pretty decent build towards Duelist without the core class...

Adamant's Tome of Secrets: How has it aged?

Not that I'm aware of. However, the Advanced Player's Guide provides several archetypes for fighters & rogues that emulate the concept within those core classes.

Pathfinder 1E If Paizo can, why can't Wizards of the Coast?

Mercurius, I think there are two other points to factor into the equation. 1. The "Current Edition" vs. the "Out-of-Print Edition" Obviously, printed material isn't going to suffer from an expiration date. No one can force a group to abandon a rules system or campaign setting. For the...

Adamant's Tome of Secrets: How has it aged?

Tome of Secrets: I find it to be a mixed bag, but a fairly useful one. Races - I wasn't particularly wowed by these. However, I'm an ardent opponent of the "Mos Eisely Effect", so I didn't buy the book for these anyway. Since none saw use at my table, I can't really comment on the mechanical...

Pathfinder 1E If Paizo can, why can't Wizards of the Coast?

To the OP, a few points: 1. Paizo can do it with the campaign sourcebook b/c: A) It's an optional component of the setting, not a RPG book that is primarily rules-oriented like the core book or APG. B) It's an expansion of the original. It is not designed to invalidate/outdate the...

The frakkin X-Mas Tree Effect: How to minimize it's impact in play?

After much reflection, I think this is as big a factor as anything. The "magic-item-advancement requirement" is so fundamentally tied to the CR system I overlooked it's impact. Since pre-PF, I was focused on Conan and other OGL games, I never used the CR much. I thought the X-Mas Tree Effect...

The frakkin X-Mas Tree Effect: How to minimize it's impact in play?

Um, thanks, but this isn't a matter of me seeking to impose my personal tastes on a magic-item-loving group of seasoned players. In my normal gaming group, yeah, I'd solicit player input (and they'd agree with me). However, if you look at my original post, the players in question are...

The frakkin X-Mas Tree Effect: How to minimize it's impact in play?

Cool, thanks. I remembered the mathematical assessment. Time to go back and revisit the AP system. Thanks, again!
