How many hits should a 1st level Fighter be able to take?

I think the issue with this is that if the fighter is so tough that attacking them is best very inefficient or at worst pointless, then the natural reaction is that to just head straight for the low hanging fruit, i.e. just ignore the fighter and kill everyone else.

D&D 5E (2014) Magic items in D&D Next: Remove them as PC dependant?

DR has always been a funny thing to me, I mean it makes sense, but on the other hand if you don't have a way around it it can be a real challenge, but if you do have the means to circumvent it is basically meaningless. If they do have some sort of CR or EL system in the next iteration of D&D I...

    How much should HP scale?

Take the average HP you think a character at level 10 should have and divide by the average HP that you believe the same character should have at 1st level and then round to the nearest whole number. If you can't get a fairly consistent result from class to class for whatever reason then take...

    How much should HP scale?

That's certainly a possibility. Though personally I had sort of considered it subsumed in multiplying from a larger base number at first level. I.e. 10x4 and 6x4 get you some differentiation. Anyway, if you're not happy with the options presented, that's what the last one is for, tell me why...

    Which Warlocks Want We?

I'm not really sure how to vote. Flavor-wise I think the 4e warlocks were amazing, and I thought the idea of the curse mechanic and the boons was very cool, but I personally found the execution to be underwhelming, it just seemed like they should have had a greater impact on the class overall...

    How much should HP scale?

How many more HP should a 10th level character have than a first level character of the same class? How important are bigger numbers? How steep should the power curve be? What the advantages or disadvantages to doing it a certain way? Should damage be scaling such that characters become...

What way of playing D&D is completely incompatible with your way?

"The DM is a dirty cheater if they dare step outside the rules as written one iota even to avoid a completely illogical outcome, if they can't perfectly account for every feat and skill point in a monster stat block, or if they haven't met the exact guidelines in the rules for wealth and items."...

How many hits should a 1st level Fighter be able to take?

I wouldn't be too fussed about it if that was how they chose to make that particular dial of gritty/heroic work, by simple altering the starting level relative to the rest of the game world. As long as it was very clearly spelled out in the rules. It's not really any different than games that...

Which class do you hate the most?

Why is a thief different from a fighter different from a druid, et c. It's about having a different play experience, not being more special than someone else.

How many hits should a 1st level Fighter be able to take?

I'm curious to know if you arrived at your desired number of hits received or your desired HP scheme first. I.E. did you say HP should be calculated this way and then derive the number of hits the fighter would be able to take or did you say a fighter should be able to take X number of hits...

How many hits should a 1st level Fighter be able to take?

Assume an average fighter (not any outlier that exceptionally good or poor) at full health. It is intentionally vague, keeping in mind that the game is going to be modular and that there will likely be different variations on the death and dying rules that are likely to range from forgiving to...

    D&D 5E (2014) I hope this isn't 5E...(art that screams "not this, not this!")

True that. I'm fond of his work, especially after it matured, from about '98 onwards.

How many hits should a 1st level Fighter be able to take?

After a little thought I think the ability to take 4 average hits from an average foe without assistance is a good number. i think that enough to allow the fighter to do hi or her job without taking the edge of danger off. That means they can face down a couple foes at once for a least a round...

    D&D 5E (2014) I hope this isn't 5E...(art that screams "not this, not this!")

This is a real pet peeve of mine, pretty much all the art that is bandied about as being "anime" isn't. It just is not. Full stop. Here is some Japanese fantasy art that ranges from the more subtle to the full on stereotype of anime art. Digik Gallery - Gallery: Takuhito Kusanagi -...

How many hits should a 1st level Fighter be able to take?

This blog post inspired this thread with its incredibly bad poll question. How durable should a first level fighter be? How many hits, on average, should they be able to withstand from a run of the mill first level foe, such as an orc or skeleton, before going down? Bonus question: How...

Which class do you hate the most?

I've never really understood how a class devoted to mental powers and mind over matter (both internally and externally) wasn't suitable for fantasy. Clearly a lot of people feel that it isn't, but I kind of have a hard time wrapping my mind around it.

    D&D 5E (2014) appendix Next

While I don't know if I agree with all of your particulars I do think that such a list should contain a few entries that the vast majority of the people picking up the book are liable to be familiar with. It makes the game seem more accessible, it gives them an instant in, the ability to...
