Are Commoners now immune to Detect Evil?

Well, anecdotally, I've been in groups where the Paladin was lazy and just ran around Detecting Evil on everything and using the results to justify almost anything. Was it bad DMing to allow it? Maybe, but not everyone knows better. Sometimes even having consequences didn't stop them. Making...

Why Changes were made in 4e

Of course WotC wants to support the RPGA. That brings more people to conventions and, in theory, it also brings more people out to the local gaming stores to play in RPGA games. 3Es marketing was all built on ever-branching out system. We produce the core rules and everyone will buy those...

    Removing homogenity from 4e

I played in a game of CP2020 once and while I did survive character creation, the first firefight within 5 minutes killed me. So I became the OTHER skate punk who dealt happy for our Fixer, just changed his name. The end of the night had our group in 2 or 3 vehicles. The solo on his...

Are Commoners now immune to Detect Evil?

This is because Fiendish Dire Rats could have ben raised in captivity, fiendish by their nature, the genes passed down from their parents. SUMMONED Fiendish Dire Rats all come from the Abyss directly and, as such, are vile outsiders who ping as pure evil, ready for the smiting. Mostly kidding...

    Removing homogenity from 4e

Well, using the numbers I gave upthread, assuming a 12 stat in something like Strength for a Wizard is a fairly positive assumption, most may even be less. This gives him the aforementioned +6. An untrained skill like Athletics would need the following at 10th level: Easy:10, Medium:16...

"You're a half elf? Really?" From the P.A. Podcasts

I grew up on the Ohio/Kentucky border and one of the guys in my D&D group was black. It was commonly noted that William was (speaking in stereotypical terms) was one of the "whitest" guys in school, while one of the "blackest" was a white guy. I know exactly what you mean :)

Why Changes were made in 4e

Given the world of CRPGs and MMORPGs, many of the possible uses of Ghost Sound would equate to "nothing happened that influences any character or NPC". Ghost Sound would likely be used similar to a Rogue's Distract ability [all MMO references will be WoW related], which would be a useful thing...

Why Changes were made in 4e

Most of the reasons not to are story based, not mechanics based. "Well if you go nova on this fight and don't save the princess, she will be sacrificed at midnight when the moons align and a pathway will open for the ta'naari to come thru and destroy the area. But hey, whatever works for you"

Why Changes were made in 4e

This is solved in games like WoW like so. Warriors have an ability called Ovepower. It is only usable when someone has dodged one of their attacks. When that occurs, the button lights up and stays active for the next few seconds. If you have the required rage and hit teh button while it is...

What Alignment system do you use now?

I think Dragonlance can still be played fine with the 5 alignment system instead of the 9, there are just more shades of grey. The Knights of Takhisis are LE as opposed to LG, but a)they came along much later in the canon and b)now there is no descriptor needed for them, nopne of this Lawful...

"You're a half elf? Really?" From the P.A. Podcasts

I was just kind of throwing something out there Tux, I have no real attachment to how they are setup. They likely are more chaotic, this happens when you are the decadent higher class who believes laws are made for those who can't govern themselves. At least, that could be one way of looking...

    Removing homogenity from 4e

A lot of the early skill challenges were written with 3 or 4 skills and many DMs will go with those and ignore all else. So depending on the DM, yes you could well be stuck with that +6. See, IMO, the Athletics isn't being used to convince him. Once you get it to the stage of the actual...

"You're a half elf? Really?" From the P.A. Podcasts

You know, speaking of Chris Rock....ok, time to paraphrase :) Eladrin are basically the snooty high elves and elves are what prior editions termed wood elves. Well, how do the 2 elf races look at each other? Do Eladrin see themselves as the law-abiding, civilized types and the Elves are...

"You're a half elf? Really?" From the P.A. Podcasts

Right, and I never really got into Bab 5 so I wouldn't have that reference to post. The Star Wars were a quick example of one way to re-color an ethnicity for your own purposes. Never said it was a godo one, just one way you could :)

    Forgotten Realms - the classics

The Avatar trilogy is awful, but I re-read it every couple of years and it still has a special place for me. The Dark Elf books can go either way for me. There was an excellent parody chapter sample written several years back that described Drizz'DD using his dual scimitars to make a sandwich...

"You're a half elf? Really?" From the P.A. Podcasts

So we just need to search more deeply for standard stereotypes? Dwarves are known for their beer, any particular food they love? Particular mode of travel, conversational standards (other than the scottish accent). We frequently see fantasy/alien races in film that appear to fit the...

    Removing homogenity from 4e

See I have problems with statements like this. If you are level 10 and only have a 12 in the relevant skill and it is not a class skill, you have a whopping +6. I fail to see how that is anywhere close to "as effective in a skill challenge as anyone else" when someone with a 14 stat and the...

What Alignment system do you use now?

The 4E alignment system was the closest I could see D&D getting to the , IMO, superior alignment system of Arcana Unearthed/Evolved. We use the 4E alignment and it basically only comes into play for what alignment/god combo is desired for Divine players. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter so...

What do you think about this bow?

I dunno, one auto-crit all day long seems like a reasonable thing to me. 70 damage at level 10 seems lower than I remember people doing multiple times a round in 3E tho, so I dunno if I would sweat it. Without having all the math for the attack in front of me it's hard to really compare.

Are Commoners now immune to Detect Evil?

Are you going to trust the Sword of a Thousand Truths to a newb? :) So if someone is evil, but has never really acted on it....they're not a nice person, but never killed anyone in cold blood or the various things Evil usually does, if they were sitting in the bar pondering how nice it would...
