I was talking to some members of our group and there are games out there that we woud like to try but have no time to fit into our regular schedual. We have talked about meeting on another night less regularly to try some of these games out. We don't want to get stuck into another long term...

I agree a dragon fight should feel epic. And 5 minutes is most likely too short depends on how many rounds that is. However as had been pointed this could have been a bugbear or something. Also we are assuming the players won. Maybe the boss took 5 minutes to cream the party.

The author has written tons of stuff for 4e and has different 4e games on the go. I think your comments are not fair.

You could eliminate a lot of the rolling as by using stats. Need to jump up on the table? That would be a DC 10. If your strength (or dex) is 10 or greater you succeed no roll needed. The fighter wearing heavy armour? The DC is adjusted to 15. Is your stat less than the DC? Then you roll.

for what its worth designing 4e NPCs was a fun exercise , and it still had that "build" feel to it.
