There's also a series of illithid grafts in Fiend Folio. Slap one on and become the hit at your next party! Dragon 296 included an Illithidkin PrC in its article on monster cultists. Dragon 308 had an article on illithid items including symbionts.

Why not just treat them as a masterwork item, available from dealers in optics? Construction could be either tinted glass or obsidian, and the price shoudn't exceed 55 gp or so. The other option is to use snow goggles, which may not be the look you're going for.
