Historians! Gamers! Armchair Gamer Historians! Gather for the arcane revolution!

The question is whether or not magic has been in use for a long time. If so, it affects history: the Crusades probably wouldn't have occurred, at least not as they did. The existence of magic --- real, tangible magic --- would have direct results on the social and technological development of...

Historians! Gamers! Armchair Gamer Historians! Gather for the arcane revolution!

Some social notes... if you want to maintain the appearance of versimilitude, then magic shouldn't be available to the parish priest, maybe not even to his bishop. [yes, this has implications for character generation] Spellcasting might become concentrated in the hands of organizations, either...

    Define "munchkin"

Munchkins often refers to power-gamers (and/or newbies) who are more concerned with 'lookit-what-I-can-do' than they are with the story. Metagaming usually refers to gaming with table knowledge; that is, your character does something because you (the player) knows what's going on. However, I...

NOOO! Jar Jar to appear in Return of the Jedi DVD

Oh well. I gave up crying over SW a long time ago... just after Greedo shot first.

Verboten! What do you NOT allow in your campaigns?

Hey, if that shocks you, try my historical campaign on for size: no spellcasters and no non-humans.

Verboten! What do you NOT allow in your campaigns?

No psionics in any of our campaigns. Prestige classes are scrutinized by the individual DMs before being allowed. Feats from the splat books and non-WotC sources are also allowed on a case-by-case basis. Everything else pretty much goes.

[July] So what are you playing?

Running: (1) Historical d20 homebrew set in 1450's Mediterranean Europe; (2) 3.5 update of the Mystara setting, centred around a bunch of thugs that run a bar. Planning: (1) A Whispering Vault campaign set in the 1940's. Playing: (1) Megatraveller --- navigator aboard a Sydkai-class...

    what to do with half-elves?

My vote is with Cyberzombie's ideas --- nice. A good non-standard half-elf, the Aelfborn, was described in Dragon 307. Adapted from the Shadowbane game, they are, well, nuts. The mixed blood drives them barmy.

Grues, Burnination, and Gnomelings: What Humorous Sources Have You Used Stuff From?

Lemme see, lemme see... 1. My party frequents a magic item shop called Monty's Magic Item Emporium. It has franchises in pretty much every city, and all the clerks are named Bob. Makes for easy roleplaying. 2. The party also consults a lawyer named Mr. Baalphegor. (The assumption is that his...

    World Building

I'l second AND third that. Ecology & Culture is a good overview of the worldbuilding process (geography, ecology, etc.) for a magical setting. Western Europe is, well, for modelling a game fairly closely on medieval Western Europe. Another book I find quite handy is the venerable World...

    Monster book under consideration

The existing 'exemplar' races suffer from extreme familiarity. Anything new is welcome, but its usefulness depends on its quality. You may wish to look at races that aren't locked onto a place on the Great Wheel cosmology. Love it or hate it, the trend in 3E/3.5 is to dump the Great Wheel and...

Getting out of the Spaghetti Dungeon

I may have some references and links back home --- I'll check later on. For now check this: Structural Modelling of Medieval Walls The key thing to remember when mapping: walls are thicker than the lines on graph paper! Take a look at a medieval church or similar building and you can expect...

What Authors Have Most Inspired Your Campaign?

Add to that list under 'other': Jorge Luis Borges (for his blurry lines b/w magic & reality) Roger Zelazny (mostly for the Amber series) Guy Gavriel Kay (low magic, high drama)
