    The mythical ideal of 1E?

Perhaps there is a mismatch of definitions here? An encounter while traveling from A to B, representing the dangers of travel in a fantastical world, is the very definition of random encounter.

    Discussing 4e Subsystems: POWERS!

They can try it all they want. Crushing Blow represents that one opening and that solid hit. Other times are basic attacks, reaping strikes, less effective because the blows are partially blocked, turned aside, glanced, etc. Crushing Blow is the shot you got in when you really pulled it off...

    Discussing 4e Subsystems: POWERS!

Now THAT was a rant. And a great one at that. Very nice post, sir. And some very valid points and examples. That's easily the best response to this imaginary problem I've seen.

    Discussing 4e Subsystems: POWERS!

Detailed explanations and examples of how the power use limitations can be handled in game is sticking your fingers in your ears? Curious... Pointing out that people trying to rationalize the power limits should look forward (what situation am I in, what can I do?) instead of backwards (why...

    Discussing 4e Subsystems: POWERS!

Man, I hate that whiny phrase, with a passion. It's like I tell my wife when she says it, which is often - yes, you should, you're the one with the problem/need. Deal with it.

Was there a real need for a fourth ed.? Or would tweaking 3.5 have done it for you?

It's not. It's the next edition of D&D. 3.5 is not the basis for 4e. D&D in general is. And yeah, we needed a new edition (reworking is bad phrasing here). 3e had run its course.

    Cynicism of an AD&D refugee

I wasn't saying that if you don't like encounter powers then you have no imagination. I was responding to the charge that it is impossible to rationalize the ability to do certain things only once an encounter or once a day. I can entirely understand people disliking the power structure of...

    Cynicism of an AD&D refugee

Of course you could use such description for any fight, that's entirely the point. And I love OD&D. Played an OD&D game just last year. It's just, for me, that the game has evolved in a positive direction to give me better tools to do the same things I've always done and wanted to do with D&D.

    Cynicism of an AD&D refugee

Come on, that's just stupid. There is nothing lazy about a game design using this framework. You're not covering anything up. A fighter with a sword fights a certain way. In any battle, the situation is fluid, openings occur, maneuvers are made, some strikes are better than others. Exploits...

    Cynicism of an AD&D refugee

It's mitigating. If they are doing more damage then their sword and board counterpart, they are dropping enemies sooner, too. So it works out about the same. Building a fighter to defend by dealing heavy damage is quite viable, and they can outdamage strikers depending on their own focus...

    Cynicism of an AD&D refugee

Only to the unimaginative. This has been discussed several times already. Exploits are called exploits for a reason, they require a decently specific set of circumstances to pull off. Descriptive players and DMs should have no problem describing that with the encounter and daily exploits...

    Discussing 4e Subsystems: POWERS!

While I like the power system inside-out, I do agree with this. My opening to my 4e tabletop game, and my players introduction to the system, took place on a battlefield. They were split on opposite sides of a petty land dispute between an independent village and a local wealthy merchant...

    Cynicism of an AD&D refugee

Congratulations, you've just described the 4e power system. A small core of abilities that get better, with a few new ones spread out over level ups...

    Cynicism of an AD&D refugee

Yes. Phantom Chasm, level 1 wizard daily. The target believes a chasm just opened up beneath them and they are plummeting to their death. They take 2d6+int psychic damage and are prone and immobilized until end of next turn. Powers aren't just damage, but damage represents the toll such...

    Discussing 4e Subsystems: POWERS!

Gee, what a shock to come to a thread wherein 4e players are discussing 4e systems in order to gain a greater familiarity and master of 4e rules only to find justanobody running on for pages telling us all how badwrongfun it all is. Justanobody must be a 4e character, since his tactic just...

    Cynicism of an AD&D refugee

That's apples and oranges though. 4e is a new system with a slightly different way of approaching combat (finally truly abstracting HP). Everything does damage, but damage isn't direct physical damage. Believing a yawning portal just opened up under your feet and that you are falling as you...

    Character Builder Beta available

For those of you having trouble with the .net install - the progress bar seems to mean nothing. Mine filled in a few seconds and then it just sat there. I went back and read my Google Reader for about 10 minutes before I got a popup telling me restart, then the install finished just fine. In...

    Character Builder Beta available

Wow, bit late to the party, wasn't home today to play with it earlier. I am seriously impressed, this thing is great. No real feedback yet, just tinkering. I'll be putting it through its paces though, I've made dozens of characters since release to familiarize myself with everything.

    Cynicism of an AD&D refugee

That question has been answered. 4e is certainly more complete than 3e. Every class in the PHB is complete and workable through all levels of play. All the elements you need to run the game are included, including a starting town and setting (the Vale) that were not present in 3e. The...

WotC acknowledges 4th Edition Not for Everyone?

--Today, Wizards of the Coast announces a new product line of mechanical pencils bearing the D&D logo. A company spokesman stated "these will be ideal for all RPGs, really." Dave: OMG! Hasbro is going to buy GURPS!
