Sounds like its time to come up with a custom prestige class. Ya there are 10 to the 127th power prestige classes out there. But there is nothing quite the same as a class you and the DM work together to develope. Check out the section in the DMGII for rough guidelines on how to make them.

I have to agree with Kafkonia. The 5th party member should be a more combat related cleric or druid. Not quite as good in combat as a Pally but the additional healing early on is a huge bonus.

We use a combination of all the options. Heck we even tare apart post-its to make a "marker" for creatures over 10'x10' in size.
