Going digital with Maptools and 4e

After a few more sessions, we ended up getting a better projector and using the wall. It allows for a much bigger map and more room on the table. With that, we lost the IR pen, but moved to a wireless mouse. So the players can still control their characters. So far, the response has been...

    Christmas with the Gamer...

I saw this the other day and immediately sent it to my group...who promptly ignored it. So I read the first couple paragraphs to them during our recent session. They loved Dad as a Warlord.

    Balancing a Custom Power

This week I am going to kill everyone's favorite NPC(including mine). This is temporary as the party cleric can raise dead, just not in the middle of a dungeon. The challenge is more about how they will handle getting the body(I require the whole thing for resurrection) out. As a result I'm...

    Best RPG buys of 2010?

Savage Worlds Explorers Edition - now I just need to wrap up my 4E campaign so we can play my other favorite purchase War of the Dead - this zombie apocalypse reads like a great adventure and I can't wait to run it.

Played Basic D&D for the first time in over 20 years last night...

We've run a couple one shot AD&D things and I expect once we finish up our 4E campaign we will look at running something AD&D or OD&D for a while. We have very much enjoyed the less regimented, combat focused powers, items and abilities. Combat speed was also much quicker. Heck, we could...

    AD&D 1st Edition Books

Funny, I always thought he was a fire giant. Probably because as an 8 year old boy, giants were far more common than efreets.

How do GMs convey the maps from adventures published online?

I haven't run something like this since but if I were, I would scan it in and just import it into MapTools. Throwing it through a projector does have its advantages.

Played Basic D&D for the first time in over 20 years last night...

Back 6 or 8 months ago, I put my players through an AD&D delve using The Ghost Tower of Inverness, C2. Including character generation, it took only 2 sessions to complete. The players had a great time, and I had a great time DMing it. We went back to our long running 4E campaign, with the...

    D&D 4E 4E White Plume Mountain?

I hacked together a conversion for my gang. It's not bad, you do have to take some of the encounters out, and make some of the rooms bigger. The old AD&D 20x20 room doesn't work for tactical combat in 4E. They did enjoy a lot of the "old school" elements that I left in.

Start a campaign with a virtual table now, or wait?

Play now, play later, play often. The maptool video tutorials Iron Wolf linked to, really are fantastic. You'll spend less than an hour watching them and will be able to dive right in.

    Playing Vertically

The new 3400 lumen projector arrived from Ebay the other day and it's awesome. We played last night and opted to just shoot at the wall. The almost 6 foot wide map was a sight to behold. Even the guy with bad eyes didn't have a problem with seeing it. I was concerned the players might now...

    December Calendar

I know I'm dreaming, but my monster builder hasn't seen an update since August. I'm assuming that since it is going online, that I might as well give up hope till that comes out.

    STARGATE UNIVERSE #9:Visitation/Season 2/2010

Not to be gross, but if she lost the baby, there should be remains. How is it that is never mentioned? That would answer a lot of questions.

    What I Learned Running a 1 to 30 D&D Campaign

More than one action per round...beholders are your friends. I think they are probably my favorite 4E creature...they go every turn! I see Mike is getting at. My campaign will hit Epic this session or the one after it...they are level 20 now. Hopefully I can use some of his advice, but I...

What kind of puzzles do you give your players?

I DM for a group of 5 players. Two, are die hard hack n slashers. They don't get puzzles, but will usually make an attempt. The third guy enjoys the puzzles, but is usually overshadowed by my puzzle lovers. I won't deny it, every puzzle I've thrown at these guys has been solved in under 5...

    Playing Vertically

The thought for token control was either a wireless mouse, or a laser pointer. Right now we use an IR pen and wiimote hack. If it is a wireless mouse, I could conceivably put my back to the image and shoot it from a ceiling mount, or a pole. I'm thinking I may need to mock this up before...

    Playing Vertically

My group has recently moved to maptools and a projector. Right now I've got the projector overhead, it hits a mirror and shoots down onto the table. It works great, but it's a pain to setup(I need a ladder) I'm curious if anyone has tried projecting onto a vertical surface, such as a wall...

    Unexpected Return

As the DM, I did rule, the way I wanted. I was surprised by the player. He's our rules lawyer, so once I explained my point of view, I thought he would agree. But he didn't. Not that it mattered, he was staying put, soaking up damage.

Passing on the Torch: A Saturday Afternoon Kids/Parents game

I've posted several times about introducing my 7 year old daughter to the game and how much she enjoys it. She's even sat at the table with my regular group a few times for a quick hour of playtime. Fortunately, my players are very good sports about it. My brother has 2 slightly older...

? for all those that use a VTT program currently

One thing I really enjoy about maptools is the ability to build/explore a complete dungeon. Lets face it, with 4E, there isn't always time to deal with sneaking down a hall. With maptools, my players move their tokens, the fog of war is lifted, and they see only what their light source allows...
