I'd rather have PCs be well above your average slack jawed yokel right from level one.
Somewhat joking, there was a push in the late 1970s to try to get Americans to convert, but it was widely rejected in most spheres of average American life. The push went away as suddenly as it appeared, so it seemed like disco, a fad.
I can see it working, but only against multiple adjacent opponents. I missed the goblin I was aiming at with my sword, but it hit the one next to him and hit for x damage.
I'm one of the few that does use yards often since I'm a golfer.
Meters are part of that metric system fad they tried pushing on us back in the 1970s.
I'll stick with five feet/ square.
I'm in the same boat, if need be I can just alternate from 1e to 4e. I'm sure that I'll buy the initial round of books for 5e and give it a campaign to try it out, but at best it will just be a part of the rotation.
Or we could finish the loop back by making the Paladin a class for those who roll their ability scores really well. Paladin and the Ranger should be classes that make the ordinary fighter look like a bum.
Not having my second favorite class (after Wizard another hissy fit causing class) would...
Bad example on my part, I just think there will be an outcry to get the advantage system ratios locked down (with a chart) and not be left to DM judgement.
