Fair enough. Thank you for clarifying.

Well, I can't really say until the release, we will have to wait and see I guess...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

We really don't know that until the final release. From what I understand, post-OGL 1.1 they are shifting in a new direction, which means reworked rules, which means that they may in fact become incompatible with the 5.1 SRD. We will have to wait and see. The issue of SRD's is not just limited...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

This is completely tone-deaf to the current situation. You are saying we should show goodwill to a company that just burned down 20 plus years of goodwill within the community? All those smaller companies, publishers, writers, artists & commenters very nearly got put out of business due to the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

I agree we will see in a few months. Just don't be surprised if they decide to go back to their old habits. We still don't have the 3e SRD in creative commons (and its been a whole year), and there is no guarantee that they will deliver the next SRD into CC as well. This actually supports my...

WotC: 'We made a mistake when we said an image not AI'

And Picasso was born in 1881, and helped evolved the state of art so that it could become what we understand to be "modern art." Furthermore, Picasso made art during a period of time where there was no internet, and no computers. Comparing Picasso's work to the work of a modern 21st century...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

I guess we will have to wait & see. Yes. I have noticed enough changes to suspect that publishers may need a new SRD to publish if the changes are significant enough. That makes the 5.1 SRD less than useful to make new 3pp content for dnd in the future. I am not going to make anything for it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

Agreed, in the sense that the 5.1 SRD will always be useful to creators (just like older SRD's), but I meant to say that it will become obsolete for 3pp's who choose to stick with one-dnd in the future, IF, they release a new restrictive license like with 4e.

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

They can change the rules significantly enough so that the 2014 5.1 SRD will become incompatible & thus obsolete in a few months. Character creation has already changed significantly. The new SRD will very likely be released with a new OGL license. I highly doubt they are going to have anything...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

Nothing is future proofed. They can pull this entire stunt anytime they want to by releasing a new poison-pill OGL for the new edition in a few months, just like they tried with the 4e GSL, requiring anyone who wants to make material for the new edition to sign the 1.1 or 1.whatever version they...

Yes, corporations aren't your friend. But not many of them resorted to wotc's tactics. When Paizo's Pathfinder 1e was at the top of the sales charts during 4e, they didn't go into mega-greed mode declaring that their game is "undermonetized." Paizo is also unionized, unlike wotc. They also...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

Pretty sure we're in general agreement, but kind of talking past each other. I know dnd isn't failing, and won't probably for a very long time. I just think its sad that most people don't know about all the other amazing games out there.

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

The astounding amount of forever GM's might disagree with you. GM retention is a problem, I won't pretend to have any solutions for it. The number of GM's that say they can't run non-dnd games due to pressure from players runs contrary to this. This reasoning ignores the reality of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

Wotc did this to themselves, repeatedly, but it seems like you are content to blame those who are pointing out their mistakes, rather than the source. No other company tried to burn down the entire industry surrounding them. Most companies have co-existed for many years, and many employees move...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

"the only way" is to see that there is no true one way of doing anything. That said, " Is a pretty harsh statement, so is dnd the only "actually good game" to you? That is pretty insulting to the thousands of non-dnd rpg's out there. And if you mean good games without toxic fanbases, well...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

I agree no one should be the steward of the industry. I do not agree that publishers will "slaughter" each other, there is enough to go around for everyone (assuming dnd burns to the ground, which it probably won't anytime soon). Tales of the Valiant and A5E both co-exist and don't "slaughter"...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

And that is the exact reason the rest of the industry has struggled, because dnd/ wotc is so monolithic, it may as well be a monopoly. I'll repeat it because it bears repeating, the previous d20 glut almost destroyed the entire industry when it collapsed (thanks to wotc killing the d20 STL)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

Regardless of any of the numbers, there is a hard cap on the entire industry, as without GM's, we don't have any games to play in (and no one to buy books). If dnd fails, GM's might adopt other games, instead of constantly being forced to play dnd because of peer pressure. Dnd isn't a gateway...

    D&D 5E (2014) Don't Throw 5e Away Because of Hasbro

I won't speak for that individual. But you are basically saying that a rising tide lift all boats, and you kind of need some evidence to prove that, given that over 90% of the entire industry, likely more, is just dnd. In a world where dnd doesn't exist, that dude would likely have gone to work...
