A player in my game adopted a baby basilisk. It wrapped itself around his neck and mostly slept, mostly. Then it went off with the intelligent basilisk in Gravenhollow.

Too much hassle for me. I just say let them shoot. Realistically you might hit your guy but how much fun is that? And it never happened in Baldur's Gate so that's canon.
