Yeah, that's all good. I don't leave anything they need to know/find to chance. Stuff they COULD miss is never really important in my games. And I do fudge (both for and against) to keep the drama going.

One thing my group does is to level up even if we have not reached the xp level to do so if we finish a session with less than an encounters worth of xp till the next level. They level up in between sessions so as to cut down the admin time.

I let my guys train to learn abilities (there’s some nice conversions of 4e powers that have been converted for 5e) but I make them pay through the nose for it. I set a maximum time limits for them to learn and their learning roll dictates how much that time is reduced by.

The way I view crits are like the scene when the Alien Queen tries to pharyngeal bite Ripley when she is in the power loader. It’s a shocking attack that puts you on the back foot for a second.

When my group gets to the end of OOTA they will be about 14th level. I’m going to give them the option of retirement or going epic as the speed they level up from there will decrease. I know at least one player not keen on high level but who knows. Tl:dr. Let the players decide.

You could take a listen to this. Also take a listen to his ruff about Obyriths. I’ve used Tharizdun as one of the antagonists in OOTA and this stuff was really useful.

My group is close to cracking 13th in the end run of OOTA. None of them have played characters 1-high level and they seem to be enjoying the novelty. It’s taken us 18 months to get there so they have been drip fed their abilities.

Get a good faction to offer him the job of double agent. Work with the grand parents to learn all he can (so you can get an arc out of him learning the ropes) with the ultimate aim of bringing the whole thing down. Obviously his grand parents are not the big bads, just the tip of the iceberge...

I give out xp but they all have the same total. People who can’t make it still get xp. I give out combat and story awards.

I let my guys level up as soon as their experience point total ticks over the next level target. They get all their level stuff immediately as it’s assumed that by knocking that last kobold’s block off all their studying finally clicks into place.

Will be getting this. I just have resist adding Predators.
