D&D General The Timing of Creation

If you are gong to be the DM you need to do it your way- not by committee. In session zero you lay out what is expected. If some of them can’t agree they aren’t being forced to play. DMing can be exhausting so having people constantly raise complaints is going to grind you and them into the...

Why? You just make a stealth roll against the passive perception of the mark. I don’t see the problem.

Eh, different strokes for different folks.

They come up loads if the DM puts them in the game. Seems to me that the experience you have had is at least partially down to a DM being overly restrictive.

D&D 5E (2014) Restrictive DMs and player enjoyment

When I started as a DM in the mid 80s I used to be really tight. Very strict. Realism was a constant thing for me to wrestle with. Minor details were very important. Now I try as much as is practical to let the PCs live up to their player's expectations. So I don't sweat the small stuff.

    D&D 5E (2014) Thievery in 5e - still relevant?

I just set a DC and if they roll they are in stealth mode. Modelling all the minutia is too much of a faff for me. For example: one of my players wanted to scout a werewolf lair in the woods. They wanted to circle it and do a count of how many people we in the lair. I thought about it for...

Sorry, you've lost me. I guess I just don't understand the point you are making.

The DM decides the complexity. Like I said up thread. Slap a DC on it, make the roll, if they succeed boom- job done. Just like in BG3.

Totally disagree. If the DM nerfs a skill it's not the fault of the skill.

In 5e Dark Vision doesn't spoil stealth. It's not thermographic vision like in previous editions where body heat shines out like a light bulb.

I guess that's your choice but both tables I run make frequent stealth checks to achieve their goals.

But it is and that’s the game we are playing and discussing. I’m really losing the thread of what you are getting.

    D&D 5E (2014) Thievery in 5e - still relevant?

That’s for the DM to rule on: narrative flow and all that. I hate the phrase common sense but that’s what DM and players have to both have to keep the game from getting bogged down.

Slap a DC on it. Player makes one check. Pass or fail: DM describes a montage. Player feels like the Predator or gets caught. Game moves on. I can see no situation when 50 checks is fun.

That what I don’t understand: it’s the DM’s job to put a DC on the task: that’s a fundamental DM skill. Not being able to do that means maybe they don’t have the chops to be a DM?
