At both my tables there are fighters. In the past three campaigns I’ve run (over the past five or so years) there has been at least one fighter.

I agree with this so much. Sometimes I don’t prepare anything and just make it up as I go (within the context of the situation).

Yet they run away from encounters? Can you describe a combat encounter the party were allowed to engage with? I’m running a party through it now and they went from 1st to (now) 7th level without any of the cake walk vs tpk worries you’ve mentioned. What’s the party composition?

I dunno man, I think it’s reasonable to think that an Earth elemental clobbered by a rock should take normal damage.

If you’re not adjusting things no wonder your players just run from things. If a DM isn’t fine tuning encounters they’re just reading from a script. Improvise, m’ boy!

Don’t you adjust the encounters on the fly? That keeps it challenging but not too close to an unwanted un dramatic death.

I dunno man, my group butchered him when they found out what he was up to. The game carried on just fine.
