D&D 4E 4E: The day the game ate the roleplayer?

The systems most effective at enhancing or even inspiring role-playing generally have something to do with mental condition. At least in my experience. The Unknown Armies meter system is pretty much unparalleled in my opinion. It gives a real sense of consequences that I find lacking in other...

    Rethinking Reflex and AC...

Very good point. I had not even considered that. As a special effect it makes sense but I never considered it in that context. Divorcing magical special effects from basic equipment is a must in my eyes. It would make sense with the named armors but otherswise I hope we don't see it as a broad...

    Rethinking Reflex and AC...

Is there precedent for that? I know SWSE had a Fort bonus from armor but I don't see any indicators for 4e. Which suits me. Armor helping you resist poison or a death-like effect just seems wrong to me.

    Members by location

Is there any way to search the membership database by geographic location? I'd like to get a sense of how many Enworlders live in my area.

D&D 4E 4E: The day the game ate the roleplayer?

Grain of salt taken. Neither I nor any of my fellow gamers in my immediate or even once removed circle of gamers are avid readers of Dragon or takers of Dragon reader's polls. At the three gaming events that I have put on myself and the multitude I've attended (multitude of maybe 10) in the...

You guys, we're gonna get the lock! Play nice, dudes. It's just a game.

D&D 4E 4E: The day the game ate the roleplayer?

I'm not sure what that means in reference to the quote. Or at all, really. I jest. Flying invisibility as a 1st string tactic is pretty puerile. That's hardly in the spirit of dungeoneering. :p There are plenty of counters to it but the easiest ones aren't always what a GM wants to use...

D&D 4E 4E: The day the game ate the roleplayer?

I see where you are coming from but I can't totally agree as far as the melee fighter is concerned. I saw an awful lot of melee types that branched out into maneuvers instead of just pure damage. I mean sure it's all about killing stuff for fighter types but you can do it with some real panache...

D&D 4E 4E: The day the game ate the roleplayer?

I think my point is more in the range of Party A: Fighter, does 10 dps in melee as a 3e style tank. Rogue, does 10 dps by spring attacking. Wizard, shoots 10 dps at range. 5 levels later... Using the same tactics Party A: Fighter, does 15 dps in melee as a 3e style tank. Rogue, does 15...

D&D 4E 4E: The day the game ate the roleplayer?

Or I'm trying to further illustrate what another poster was conveying and you're dismissing out of hand. Potency of effect is not the term to use. I can see that in retrospect. But it doesn't mean I'm not arguing a valid point. We've taken off on a tangent only only nominally related to the OP...

D&D 4E 4E: The day the game ate the roleplayer?

Thank you for not dismissing my point out-of-hand. It's "potency of effect" that got me in trouble and I see why. I should have said potency of role to clarify. And you're right about the prematurity. I'll freely admit to that. It's purely an instinct thing for me. I've played enough different...

4E or 3.5 or something else - what's in your future?

I will continue to play d20stein. Fashioned from the stitched up corpses of d20 Conan, d20 Modern, and OCD it is sometimes lulled into role-playing and sometimes goes berzerk and smashes everything. :p

D&D 4E 4E: The day the game ate the roleplayer?

No but the power suites of the classes are very colored. Each is unique but equidistant in difference to their closest match. I'm sure that certain multi-classes are a lot more complimentary than others on a match for match basis. It's all very symmetrical and uniform. You like M:tG or L5R?

    D&D 3.x joela's KISS DnD 3.5 Houserules

I'd remove that caster level factor. It seems unnecessarily punitive to me. I think Griffin's justification their is that spells have higher values of duration, range, and even direct effect such as number of magic missiles or dice of fireball damage. It seems to draw inspiration from the...

    Warlords at D&D XP?

My understanding of core is that it is present in the main rules that are required to play the game. In 3e Fighter, core, Cleric, core, Knight or Beguiler, not. Core classes are called such under the assumption that they are usable right out of the box without splats, house-rules, or web...

D&D 4E 4E: The day the game ate the roleplayer?

I don't know why you guys are hacking. This seems like a pretty relevant point to me. I think that the transparency of balance is an important issue. Take the roles that are fulfilled by the party, striker, defender, etc. (forgive me, I can't remember the other two). Each one of those roles is...

    Warlords at D&D XP?

My bad. Unclear in my statement. By mid-range I meant the middle grade combatant. In 3e terms the +3/4 base attack guy. I seem to remember reading this in the early previews. That the warlord is more about bolstering and inspiration than toe-to-toe combat. Or at least not heavy damage dealer in...
