you drew the short end of the stick

I've certainly seen differences like that in random generation, and it wasn't a big problem.

Thinking about going to back to College

As a major-switching PhD, I recommend not bothering with a second BS degree. In your case, since you're starting from an English BA (I assume), there could be some advantage to completing a full BS if you can do it in 2 years though. Otherwise (if you can - depends on the school's policies about...

It seems you take yourself far too seriously.

Defeated by puzzle - campaign over

It's a metagame puzzle because it doesn't fit in the world. It's the absolute worst example of the genre, where the DM literally takes a page of out of a puzzle book and inscribes it into the floor of the dungeon, and the "characters" are supposed to write in the solution. The only thing that...

Defeated by puzzle - campaign over

That's the puzzle of the most abysmal kind, totally metagame, ripped right out of a Mensa quiz book. This isn't one of those "insane wizard" dungeons is it? The problem with the "extend the pattern" puzzles is that you're supposed to able to find the one clear pattern. Someone who doesn't think...

    question about keep restoration

The cheap way is to have it featured on "This Old Keep."

What do you look for when you purchase an Adventure Module?

Ah, I guess if our module requirement is "map should be clear and correct" I'd agree, though I would think that falls in the "it goes without saying" category. I was more getting the sense that we were holding out for maps with anatomically correct depictions of each tree and elaborate scenes of...

What do you look for when you purchase an Adventure Module?

I understand how they're used, but I have a hard time thinking of any case where a plain black and white line-drawing map failed me when a full-color cartographic masterpiece with curly-cues on the border would have worked. Like if the map is legible and accurate, I don't see much more value...

What do you look for when you purchase an Adventure Module?

So I'm increasingly curious - why are maps so important to people?

What do you look for when you purchase an Adventure Module?

They should sell them with an optional outer cover for an extra $10.

    Detect Evil on party members

I believe we used something similar, though clerics had detectable alignment.

    Detect Evil on party members

Well, I don't think immediately attacking anyone with evil alignment is something paladins should be doing. They always forget the "lawful" part, or make some Judge Dredd "I am the law!" kind of argument. (Anyone who says "I am the law" is Chaotic, in my book.) But more to the point, my advice...

What's the worst repercussions you've experienced from playing an evil campaign?

One of our players got carried away and went out and killed Orcus in real life.

It's nice to be so loved (or: the world of IT is insane!)

IME, the big dividing line is still roughly between systems programmers and apps programmers. Systems has always been a tough area to get a good job in just because there aren't so many non-support positions, like there are only so many OS and compiler vendors in the world. I always found the...

Do you need high stats to be an effective character?

The balance of party stats matters more than the absolute value. If everyone has so-so stats, it's not so much a problem. It can become a problem if one PC has like +10 total bonuses and another has +0. The way I look at it like, +4 or +5 bonuses are worth a level or so of power, so low stats...

It's nice to be so loved (or: the world of IT is insane!)

I gotta say I don't know where this "bottom rung" programmer stuff comes from - all the developers I know have jobs (unlike the sysads) and make half again what a sysad does.

    Detect Evil on party members

I've met not a few gamers who claimed to be playing LG characters who everyone else pegged as CE.

What do you look for when you purchase an Adventure Module?

Short, interesting, flexible with regard to location, logical, CONSISTENT WITH THE STATED LEVEL RANGE. No freaking 3rd-level adventures with fiendish dracoliches lurking in the climactic encounter. I don't care about the art, the elegance of the map, the cover, or the summary. I ain't gonna...

How would you make a fantasy Ironclad "go?"

It'd have to be done in parts - A 16th level caster can only animate a gargantuan object, about a 20ft. long boat. And then 3000 XPs to make each part permanent. Speed is 10 ft unless it has something like wheels or legs.
