We use an old door on sawhorses for our table. Cheap, easy to put aside when not gaming, and I can tell my players to gather around THE DOORWAY TO ADVENTURE! They always roll their eyes at that, the ingrates.

That's actually how I used N1 in my current 1e campaign, in fact! I used the map and a lot of the room descriptions, but pretty much totally restocked it with encounters and treasures to suit the adventure I was writing. I get more use out of module maps than I do the published material that...

I'm liking the 2e initiative system a lot. We just recently started using it in my 1e game, and it's gone over very well. Clean, and simple enough that we can take the luxury of giving everyone individual initiative rolls, which everyone seems to really enjoy.

I'm pretty positive there was a big damn write-up on Vecna and his cult a few years ago in Dragon - sounds like it's pretty much exactly what you're looking for. Hopefully, one of the good folk here who kept up on that more than I did can point you toward a specific issue number!

This trick might help you out with spell durations if you do decide to keep them by the book. When a player casts a spell, immediately write down its name and draw a number of empty circles beside that equal to the number of rounds of duration of a spell. At the end of every round, right before...
