D&D General I think the choice of Species / Race / Ancestry has more to do with Story than Rules...

See, I think there should be a difference. One shouldn't be superior to another, except in a particular context. An elf would fight more like Li Mu Bai gliding through the bamboo forest, a dwarf would be more like the Nordic warrior at Stamford Bridge. I don't have a problem with the player...

All magic is cursed…what types of mechanics make sense at the table?

I've come across at least one system back in the day where the magician would accrue points with the casting of each spell. As long as it was kept below a certain threshold these points would slowly dissipate. If the threshold was exceeded a saving throw was made. If made there were no...

D&D General Should D&D feature fearsome critters and other Americana?

Exactly. Although I didn't think it was that old.

D&D General Should D&D feature fearsome critters and other Americana?

By an author who heard of the creature but didn't get a physical description. I'm trying to remember who told that to me, but the description of an antlered corpse creature isn't much older than 20-30 years. It might have been Grimm or Supernatural, come to think of it.

What's this? The Great Courses made a series on worldbuilding?

D&D General I think the choice of Species / Race / Ancestry has more to do with Story than Rules...

What impact does being an elf have narratively? What does being an elf mean? Now, that in of itself could be an interesting discussion. But if I'm going to play an elf with no mechanical benefit, and I'm thinking of an entity that is agile, perceptive, strange mindset and sleep requirements...

D&D General I think the choice of Species / Race / Ancestry has more to do with Story than Rules...

It wouldn't matter because they're all the same. Human, I guess? Why would I play an elf or dwarf if there is nothing that makes me more elvish than being tall and slim or dwarvish by being short and stout? I might as well roll a die. Or, play a dwarf since I look like one. That's casting to...

How 'Hope' and 'Fear' Work In Critical Role's Daggerheart

I like the concept. Notably, the skirmish game Silver Bayonet rolls 2d10, being Skill and Power. The sum is your attempt to hit, your damage is just the Power die. Modifiers, often rerolls, are tied to one die depending on source. So, a scope for your rifle adds to the Skill die. It will be...

How 'Hope' and 'Fear' Work In Critical Role's Daggerheart

Perhaps an unlocking mechanic could be useful as well. Fear tokens become available 1:1 when Hope tokens are used. That could throttle the number available, but at a consequence of using them after Hope has been expended. Hmm...

You could also use a different scale if the referee is gaining too many tokens. Not knowing the system, if a player gets +2 for a token, the ref gets +1. Or, 1 token to avoid a complication, the ref spends two to invoke one. Or something like that.

D&D General Art Thread! What does a D&D wizard look like?

I forget if it was from a book, TV show, or what, but I remember reading one character saying to another "you haven't aged a day!" and she replied "I would be a poor wizard if I didn't figure out how to keep myself young."

    D&D General other possible elements?

Mike Gunderloy, back in the day, made a collection of specialty mages for Earth, Water, Light, Dark, Light, Lightning, Crystal, Acid, and Wind as opposed pairs. Acid and Wind were a bit clerical, allowing the creation of "corrupted" and the turning thereof.

AD&D 1E AD&D players and referees, what do you think of ascending AC?

It's what I use for my bespoke AD&D game. Max AC of 30, naturally.

AD&D 1E AD&D (yes, 2e too) players and referees, what do you think of rolling under for ability and NWP checks?

When I use ability checks, I have the players roll a d20 and add to the ability score seeking to get a 20 or better. 30 or better is a special success. This is equivalent to roll under, and seems easier for my players.

Ha! Perhaps, or I misunderstood. Not my intent. I thought I saw a commonality, but I guess not.
