    Grading the Burning Wheel System

No. I bought BW Gold last year, and it was an interesting read. Having a torrid affair with Traveller (and RQ) in my youth, I discovered a strong appreciation for lifepath systems. I prefer "zero to hero" framework games, but the characters having more of a past than walking off the farm last...

    Grading the Burning Wheel System

"GM presents the players with problems/situations based on player-determined priorities." This is a stand that you both espouse, albeit worded differently. You just do it with different systems.

    Grading the Burning Wheel System

I see no conflict between Celebrim's and pemerton's positions, regarding agency. I believe they have the same goal, and arrive there by different paths.

DDAL Things I learn from being a DM for 500 Adventure League sessions.

I DMed numerous Living City adventures back in the day. All of these are spot on and true then as well. Having a reputation for being punctual and fair carried me through a number of issues. People came to accept adverse rulings much more when other players at the table stood up for you. People...

D&D 5E (2014) What, if anything, bothers you about certain casters/spells at your table?

Well, that is the original meaning, after all. But, yes, I hear you. Another reason I went with my guilds.

D&D 5E (2014) What, if anything, bothers you about certain casters/spells at your table?

Let's see... We changed cantrips around a bit. Druidcraft, eldritch blast, prestidigitation, and thaumaturgy function as written. All other attack cantrips have their damage capped at 1d4, and the maximum number of cantrips that can be cast per day is Attribute bonus + Proficiency bonus...

D&D 5E (2014) What, if anything, bothers you about certain casters/spells at your table?

That's one of my main points of confusion with 5e at the beginning. "What do you mean people in armor can cast spells! That's absurd!" Then I was walked through the rules and noticed that was a thing, now.

D&D 5E (2014) [+]Exploration Falls Short For Many Groups, Let’s Talk About It

I'm pretty sure that subclass abilities key off of the spell schools. Not 100%, but you're hamstringing yourself if you aren't. Furthermore, choose better spells that synergize with your subclass better? But, that's why I'm talking about guild subclasses rather than school subclasses. You can...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]Exploration Falls Short For Many Groups, Let’s Talk About It

My experience has been people who like spellcasters want a toolbag of options. An interesting toolbag is better than a generic one. And, as long as they have useful options it is okay if some iconic spells are not available. Fireball is great for clearing out a squad of foes, but monster...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]Exploration Falls Short For Many Groups, Let’s Talk About It

I've done this. Three lists for wizards and clerics, each. Plus a curated druid list. 12 spells each for spell levels 1-6, 9 spells for cleric spell level. It took some work, but the classes have much stronger themes. That said, all of the "problematic " spells are still there but often...

D&D 5E (2014) [+]Exploration Falls Short For Many Groups, Let’s Talk About It

I concur with a lot of issues mentioned. There should be a list of what can happen while traveling or exploring. - Travelling safe paths leads to more automatic encounters but expected or safe ones. The burned out mansion two days out of town that everyone knows about, the patrols between...

I changed the spell to tie into the language's use. I also have a 3rd level spell understand text, which functions similarly but addresses one of the following: temporarily fills in small bits of missing text, grants a clue to the language, identify one pertinent linguistic or cultural pearl...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

Part of the ... fascination of this thread for me is observing the practice of a different highly technical and precise profession. In my profession details matter, critically so. It's been impressed on me over the years that Law is the same. There are specialties and sub-divisions where two...

"Oddities" in fantasy settings - the case against "consistency"

If I'm parsing you correctly, whoever builds a castle... is a castle owner? Right? For certain classes there are further benefits, but if you want a castle you win enough coin and build your own.

"Oddities" in fantasy settings - the case against "consistency"

I thought it was similarity of rules. There's a pathway for PCs with 9d6 hp, so I would expect a parallel development for NPCs with similar HD. If we're focusing on solely first level PCs, then, no, there isn't a formal way for them, PC or NPC with 1d6 hp to a level of status or rank.

Yes. And? What context did I miss?

First, be 9th level. Second, perform favors for existing nobility. Third, be granted such rank by said nobility.

"Oddities" in fantasy settings - the case against "consistency"

Depends on the context. This might be the guy we're supposed to protect. Or, maybe they are the one preventing the flow of magic and we have to stop them from doing that. If it is contrary or conflicting with the collaboration that the people around the table agreed to, it's a bit of a bait...
