    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

I'm not sure if this is an adequate response. It's more just related thoughts that were on my mind as I was coming out of the gym. I would agree that many games (especially more recent ones) do not allow for a character to die in one hit. However, some do. (Heck, in Dungeon Crawl Classics...

    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

Depends on what exactly you're asking. Lethality and actions having consequences isn't necessarily synonymous with characters dying. For example, even if I dial up some of the optional GURPS rules that make things harsher, that doesn't necessarily mean that PCs die frequently. It means that...

    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

Different flavors of icecream... In some games, your character can't survive being hit by a Giant's axe. My default view is that any size of axe to the skull or face of a character should generally be deadly. I'm also of the belief that verisimilitude need not perfectly model realism...

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

Thank you for answering. The example of not knowing the release date of BG3 sheds a lot of light on things. From my own subjective viewpoint, that's alien to how I would have thought things worked. I'm more accustomed to 'backwards planning': having a set end date for the goal and then...

    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

I love GURPS (and agree that it's not nearly as complex as it seems,) but I think it would violate the OP's desire to boil everything down into one roll. I vaguely remember D&D 3rd Edition's Unearthed Arcana book having a variant rule that did something similar to what you posted about Arcanum.

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

If you're allowed to answer this... Under the previous structure, what prevented the different chunks of the business from working toward established franchise-wide initiatives? I understand that the different parts were run as their respective senior leads saw fit, but I'm curious why that...

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

+1 Like many people, my collection of things is increasingly digital. However, there are particular items (and Supernatural is one) for which I make sure to retain physical copies because the physical copies are different.

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

I agree. I had neither said nor implied that it was. My comment was that D&D has a catalog of IP that could be licensed out. Say that does not mean it must be licensed out in its entirety. How thinly IP is sliced for a contractual agreement is up to WotC. The reason that I used music in...

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

There's a valid semantic argument there, but the end result is still the same. It would be licensing out things that are under the umbrella of D&D IP. Allowing an outside company to use a particular setting, monster, or character does not require making the entirety of the D&D catalog available.

What Is Your Go-To Pick-Up TTRPG?

For me, I would have 3 possible options: GURPS 4th Edition, Dungeon Crawl Classics, or Edge of the Empire. It may sound odd to say GURPS due to the system's reputation for crunch, but I've run and played the game enough that I can (and have) run something on the fly if need be. For the players...

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

Perhaps, but that needn't be assumed. The rights to how, what, when, and where you can use all or only some of an IP can be complex. An example would be the Supernatural TV show having rights to use music in episodes when episodes are on DVD but streaming versions of the same episodes needing...

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

I don't expect it, but I could see it as a way to profit from "problematic" material and more adult-oriented stories from older settings that don't jive with 5E's current business model. A Daggerheart Dragonlance and/or Goodman Games Dark Sun could do well. Maybe even break it down further...

Dungeons & Dragons Shifts to Franchise Model, Dan Ayoub Named as Head

Do you think there will ever come a time when Hasbro decides to license D&D out to other rpg companies? I could see a future in which various settings are paired with other game systems. Perhaps not the best analogy, but it would be like how Sega transitioned from having their own game...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

From what I'm reading, it sounds as though Daggerheart Solos suffer some of the same issues as D&D 4E Solos. Is that an accurate assessment? Related question: Would it be possible to use an encounter deck (like D&D 4E did)?

    What RPGs genres are lacking?

Diesel Punk I know that it's less popular than Steampunk, but I think there's a grittiness and attitude involved in Diesel Punk that would make for a good rpg. I could see a setting that is essentially Star Wars, but limited to one planet and using airships and fighter planes instead of...

How many "steps" is too many?

@Neonchameleon I don't mind "cinematic." I am of the belief that something can be cinematic while still maintaining some level of plausibility (or least while feeling plausible-ish enough that my brain doesn't hurt). At times, I've likened my fantasy tastes to pro-wrestling: Sure, there are...

How many "steps" is too many?

I like the idea of getting away from HP bloat. I'd go so far as to say that how modern D&D handles HP is a contributing factor in combat feeling kinda bland at times. On a personally subjective level, I care less about big numbers than I would about giving the numbers more meaning and...

How many "steps" is too many?

Okay, so not Frag, but not entirely unlike Frag either. I don't see that as overly complicated. However, I can see how some others might feel that is extra steps for an rpg to accomplish something like "Soak" or Armor as DR. In a few videos I've watched about Daggerheart, it was expressed...

How many "steps" is too many?

Having not played Daggerheart, I questions about the damage threshold step How is the Threshold to determine 1 or 2 wounds determined? It sounds a little bit like the board game Frag, but my guess is that it is not the same system.

How many "steps" is too many?

Note: At the time of this post, I have not played Daggerheart. Most of the criticism I've seen online is less about the number of steps and more about people saying that the additional steps aren't very meaningful. So, to answer the question of "how many steps is too many," I think the answer...
