Forked Thread: Did 4e go far enough or to far?

I don't think you could call an ENWorld user a "new" player. We are the established players. 4E is aimed at new players.

What do you want? (Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target audience?)

I want what I will never get: continued support for 3.5.

Why are undead immune to mind-affecting effects?

I see the difference between a living mind and an undead mind much like the difference between a live musical performance and a recorded performance. One is just an echo of the other.

    The Ideal RPG System?

For me there is no ideal system for all genres. For existing systems I would chose: Fantasy: 3.5/OGL. SF: Star Wars SAGA System. Superhero: M&M. Real world (or at least close to real world): D20 Modern.

    The Ideal RPG System?

I find that interesting, because I have always really hated the action point concept. I find the decision making very frustrating. Should I spend that point now? Or save it for later? If I spend it now am I screwing myself later? I find it so intensely frustrating that I simply never spend the...

Forked Thread: Did 4e go far enough or to far?

They've alienated existing users. Too late in that regard. Their target demographic is new players in the 12 - 18 range. I think the designers took the game in a direction it should have gone in. AND I don't like the new rules they came up with to pull that off. I've lost track of how many bad...

Forked Thread: Did 4e go far enough or to far?

Or they could have designed an edition that was incompatible with 3.5 so that there was no "carry over" of books. Sort of like 4E. My problem is both with the design team AND the marketers. While the design team did D&D a disservice I feel that it was driven by the marketers. Profit at the...

Forked Thread: Did 4e go far enough or to far?

Too far. Way too far. Seeing as I think they went so far as to make 4E not D&D. I own copies of Senzar, World of Synnibarr, Spawn of Fashan and Cyborg Commando. And I refuse to purchase any 4E materials. I consider it such a bad idea, poorly executed and horribly marketed that I can't even buy...

Irreconcilable differences(Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's...)

I can't argue with your view here. But I take exception to such a marketing philosophy. I am worth more than two new costumers. I am a collector of RPGs as well as a player. I would have spent far more than most "casual" players of the card/skirmish version of D&D. WotC screwed up, plain and...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

As I said, there are differences between 3.5 and 4E. For me those differences are deal breakers. 4E "fixed" things that I didn't think needed to be "fixed". It made changes to the game that take the system in directions that I do not think it should go in. In addition I think many of those...

Irreconcilable differences(Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's...)

But in seeking those trends (passing or otherwise) they jettisoned some of their core demographic in the process. Like myself. I was a loyal D&D consumer for thirty years. I spent thousands and thousands of dollars on official D&D products. I would have gladly continued to spend thousands of...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

But 2E didn't have the third party support that 3E did. There was some, but nearly on the same scale.

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

I think we can agree that there are differences between 3.5 and 4E. For the people that like the direction that 4E has taken the game, these differences are a positive move and are being eagerly embraced. For the people that don't like the direction 4E has taken the game, those differences are...

Ran or played in games above level 20 in "X" editions

I played a 1E Ranger from 1st level to 26th level. I still have his character binder. By the time he hit 26th level he owned a Mark V Blaster (from Gamma World), had a mutant Pegasus as a steed, owned two artifacts, had a magic item list that covered two pages, was married to a Sylph and was a...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

You didn't see it from *me*. I fully embraced 3E as I knew that 2E was seriously broken. 3.5 is not seriously broken and did not need to be completely scrapped and replaced with a tactical miniatures game. Try again.

    Is D&D recession proof?

I own some 60+ feet of RPG boxed sets and books. I could game for several lifetimes without ever spending another dime. I am still buying gaming books but only if I can get them at a steep discount. The money I am spending on new, undiscounted books has shrunk considerably. Next to zero really...

When did I stop being WotC's target audience?

Yes. I fundamentally don't consider 4E to *be* D&D. I consider it a tactical miniatures game with a fantasy expansion pack tacked on. WotC got D&D *right* with the 3.5/OGL model. It wasn't perfect I admit. But it needed a bit of a tune-up, not a rebuild. Essentially 4E is the first edition of...

Is there an "Age" factor to choice of editions?

I'm 44 and voted 3.5/OGL. I've been gaming and collecting since 1978. I think that makes me a grognard. :)

Any other Judges Guild fans here?

JG put out some great stuff, if a tad uneven. I also have the complete Pegasus run. My JG stuff is part of my collection that I will be holding onto.

    My anti-D&D LGS

That store owner sounds like a man more than willing to shoot himself in the foot. Not to mention being a tad unreasonable and rude. Gamers spend money. Some of us spend tens of thousands of dollars over the course of time. His stance seems geared towards driving potential sales out of his...
