D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

"Bulletproof" as a word comes from armor-proving. Something blacksmiths had been doing for -centuries- by shooting crossbows, arrows, or swinging swords at armor plates. Starting in the mid 1300s, Blacksmiths would test armor plates by firing hand cannons at them from middling ranges. These bad...

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

Ehhh... Monster HP will be scaled down just like player HP will be. The point is that one Meteor Swarm isn't going to wipe out a PC or a Dragon, even with a 9th level spell slot, as a one-shot impact. As far as those, yeah. Specifically as class features with limited options between them to...

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

Yeah, it is... but that's why those spells are Class Abilities rather than Spells. The goal, there, is for spells to be a fairly clean progression of combat effects with the class using a different kind of noncombat magic for other purposes.

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

@Horwath Current thoughts on attack differentiation: Fighters just straight up get 4 attacks on any targets with no limitations. Marshal gets 3 attacks, but the ability to give other players some of their attacks, increasing tactical utility. Rangers get 3-4, and are incentivized to burn more...

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

After thinking on it more... yeah. Barbarians get Cleave at 3rd. If they hit a target with their attack, they get to make a follow up on a nearby target. At 5th they get extra attack, which gives them two attacks and a second shot at Cleave. At 8th they get Great Cleave. Now they no longer...

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

Gradine's modularity was about class abilities/multiclassing. Modularity of abilities between classes so you can mix n' match to make your perfect class. I guess I could? My intent was to give a scaling spell progression so at 2nd you have two first level and one second level spell. Then at 3...

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

I don't intend to tackle it through modularity, no. I feel like cutting classes apart to stitch them together to be unfulfilling. I'd much prefer to use Archetypes and New Classes to cover concepts that aren't already covered by the base classes. Depending, of course, on just -how- far afield a...

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

I would like to note: Extra Attack exists to make sure the Martial Characters have a decent damage throughput next to Casters. It definitely slows things down, but it is pretty important, unless we wanna just turn Martial Characters into 'Quasi-Casters' with 4e style "Powers" that do multiple...

3-4 Subclass levels over the course of a 10 level class so you get some strong flavor without it overwhelming the core mechanics. Probably with some Social/Exploration ribbons tied to 2-3 of them, as well. Ah, very simple: I don't want to make people wait to play their character concept. It's...

Milestone your Levels rather than doing strict XP, and include narrative breaks where your characters have ot wait and do things. Go for One Week Long Rests and One Day Short Rests. There's options! Structural Change 11) Timey Wimey. Short and Long Rests are not 1 hour and 8 hours...

D&D General D&D 6e ala Steampunkette: Structural thoughts

So I've talked a few times about what I'd want in a 6e game. Often enough that at 3am this morning I was plagued with thoughts of game design and couldn't sleep. So here's some of the stuff I'm looking at. Putting them in quotes to be easier to isolate and parse. 1) 10th Level Classes 2) Make...

3PP Release The Night of the Knife: A Campaign Quartet Adventure

It starts at 3rd is what I mean. There are a couple of points where there could be a milestone attached, or you could follow an XP-Granting system for the investigation and combat challenges. Talked to spouse (the writer of the adventure) it's a single-level adventure. 3rd to 4th.

3PP Release The Night of the Knife: A Campaign Quartet Adventure

We're over 200% funded, at this point! Let's keep going! I need to build the next book... Island Hopping Pirates and a quartet of classes that fit that theme!

D&D General Satine Phoenix is trying to make a comeback

So there's the 2019 answer to that question, two years before her own actions were revealed. That should settle that specific aspect. As far as the main thrust of her character: Abusers do deserve the chance to become better people. Whatever the abuse is. Racism, homophobia, ableism...

.... I mean I'd watch it. Sounds like a Dark Crystal style story.
