How would making the Ranger into a subclass be any better than it is now? Especially when the classes that it could be made into a subclass have so few levels going to a subclass to begin with.
This Ranger subclass from Level Up comes close to characters such as Hawkeye and Green Arrow, but without the aid of magic.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Aragorn along with Legolas and Gimli traveled the Paths of the Dead in order to release the ghosts there from their curse should they come to Gondor's aid. Which they did.

5e should have kept 4e's Primal Magic because the magic of the Druid and the Ranger still deals with spirits, the fey, and the elements. Quoting geology textbooks is something a wizard would do as Arcane Magic deals with the sciences.
So, what would each of the Rogue's four archetype level cover with regards to a Rogue (Ranger)? The Rogue gets them at levels 3,9,13, and 17. That might not be enough. If the Ranger was a Fighter subclass, it would basically be the druidic equivalent of the Eldritch Knight.
Most of the soft drinks you get from a soda fountain start out as a flavored syrup or syrup concentrate. It's then mixed with CO2 and purified water. So, you aren't too far off. ;)
Now I have to wonder which of the many maple syrups out there in RL would make a good soft drink. :p Log Cabin? ;)
