D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

Pathfinder 1st Edition really went into this with its' Sorcerous Bloodlines. Maybe a little too much as just about any highly magical creature could sire a Sorcerer bloodline in that RPG.

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

https://dnd5e.wikidot.com/sorcerer Sorcerers carry a magical birthright conferred upon them by an exotic bloodline, some otherworldly influence, or exposure to unknown cosmic forces. No one chooses sorcery; the power chooses the sorcerer. Wizard- chooses to wield the power while experimenting...

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

It depends on which book you're looking at and how it influenced you from that point on. The 3e PHB says this, the 5e PHB says that. Which book are you referencing?

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

Not necessarily. A character who becomes bestowed with magic later in life could be the result of someone's latent sorcerous ability emerging. As a result, the character decides to multiclass into the sorcerer class sometime after 1st level.

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

More like 5e14 and A5e IMO.

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

D&D's Wizard is something of an arcane 'scientist'. When they aren't adventuring, they're experimenting and crafting spells that produce a number of different effects. All of which involve a lot of trial and error to get right at some point in time. A D&D Sorcerer otoh is someone whose...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

They did use themselves as raw material. The Blue Age Halflings used the power of the Pristine Tower and the Obsidian Lens to transform themselves into the species of Athas' Green Age. I think this was mentioned in the final book of the Prism Pentad series.

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

One culture from the Manual of Adventurous Resources: Complete, the Desert Hierarch, would be a likely shoo-in for Dark Sun. Another would be the Elemental-Bound culture.

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

More like cultural changes. If the Dark Sun setting was remade into a 5e setting, someone would be giving it the Level Up treatment. ;)

D&D General Eberron D&D Setting Explained

It's the whole Uncanny Valley thing. While the Warforged in past editions are humanoid in shape, they don't invoke it as strongly as those that will be appearing in Forge of the Artificer.

D&D General Eberron D&D Setting Explained

One of the things that drew me to the Eberron setting when it initially came out in 3e was the Warforged and how they looked. They bore a slight resemblance to robots, but they were made of wood, stone and metal. Making them resemble the robots from the 1927 film Metropolis doesn't work for me.

What Property Do You Still Want to See Get a TTRPG Adaptation

I actually read the entire series and Julian May's The Galactic Milieu series several years ago. :) The latter would make a good Science Fantasy TTRPG setting.

What Property Do You Still Want to See Get a TTRPG Adaptation

This one would be interesting as a TTRPG IMO. *It takes place in Earth's distant past (the Pliocene era) but contains alien technology as well as 22nd century Earth contraband tech. *It has psionics in place of magic. *It has a couple of D&D-like races in it. Tanu (Elves), Human/Tanu hybrids...

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

There was a thread about this setting being brought back for 5e on EN World. Anything new since then?

Heritage or Linage also works for me.

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

I think Level Up took some inspiration from the Rock Lords when it came up with this particular heritage: Rockborn | Level Up As both the Rock Lords and the Rockborn are known for Rock and Roll. ;)

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

Not sure if using a Rorschach test is the right analogy for figuring out what D&D is nowadays. It has had 50 years to give most people an idea as to what it is and how it works.

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

I don't think D&D counts as Steampunk if you were to compare it to an actual RPG setting that fits the genre, like Iron Kingdoms from Privateer Press.

D&D General Dark Sun as a Hopepunk Setting

The GoBots came out a year (1983) before the Transformers (1984). One year does not make much of a difference because the latter eclipsed the former in terms of sales and popularity.

    D&D General Mixed Background

I find it a bit amusing that 2024 D&D wants the player to take a trip down memory lane by first having them pick class, then background and finally species. There is nothing wrong with this approach as I can assume that some players probably went this route long before 2024 D&D debuted. However...
