    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: "New Wizard"

No, because Counterspell got nerfed. Not only does the countered spell not cost a spell slot, but signs are a lot of monsters are using magical abilities instead of casting actual spells now.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: "New Wizard"

Just saw art of a woman with elf ears and aasimar golden eyes. So between that and the dwarf-looking aasimar from the Warlock section, I think it's really likely that aasimar is encouraging non-human lineages to influence their cosmetic traits.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

Yes, and he does a good job of an apples to apples comparison with subclasses and Mastery traits and miss chances and all that factored in. I disagree with some of his conclusions (better to target the per-hit damage enhancements, particularly the egregiously overtuned Spirit Shroud) but I don't...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

I don't think that's an apples to apples comparison. You're counting invocations, but you're not counting all the class features a Fighter is going to have. Where's the Fighting Style benefit? Where's the subclass features calculation? Warlock subclass features tend to be defensive, while...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

That's been my understanding since the furious discussions around UA7's release. It's all about the difference between 1d6 per hit from Hex and 2d8 per hit from Spirit Shroud. The former is balanced and the latter is not. If SS didn't upscale with a 5th level spell slot, there wouldn't be a...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

Not really, that just creates a choice conflict without meaningfully addressing the balance problem. Look, the real problem is that when you combined UA Warlocks with 2014 material, there were too many powerful spell and invocation based per-hit damage bonuses. That's why a third attack scaled...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Shape of "New Druid"

If we take the words directly, the "Must be a creature you’ve seen before." limitation is gone. Now it's just "Pick the allowed number of Beast forms, up to the appropriate CR, as you please." Since they abandoned specific stat blocks for the forms, things like scaling is all down to creature...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

The way I see it, the three exist on a spectrum. Eldritch Knight is mostly a martial with a little casting, Bladesinger is mostly a caster with a little weapon skill, and Blade Pact Warlock sits somewhere closer to the middle. Well, that's if Blade Pact is properly designed. And we're not...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

I can understand being a little territorial over a class's Special Thing, and wanting to preserve unique mechanical niches in the name of class distinctiveness. I just don't agree that "gets a third attack" should be on the list. For goodness sake, Monks exist.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

I think the choice between a Tome familiar and a Chain familiar is how deep you want to go. If you just want scouting and minor utility, a Tome familiar is probably sufficient. Chain Pact is for when you want a familiar that's stronger and smarter, and you plan to follow up with Investment of...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

Technically you are correct, but everyone just kind of acts like it refers to the Warlock and not the Patron. Partly because that's how the original 3e Hexblade was, and what the nomenclature most easily suggests. Partly because (as this thread has discussed) no one has any idea what the heck a...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

By itself, it's not. Combined with some of the spell based per-hit damage bonuses out there, the scaling was fairly impressive. If those spells will remain untouched and still on the Warlock spell list in Revised 5e is an unresolved question, and one that many people have wrongfully ignored.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

On the one hand, they're certainly willing to do some of that. Archfey is basically all new, and GOO is nearly as heavily rebuilt. But on the other hand, both of those had clearly defined and widely popular thematic identity. Everyone knows what an Archfey or GOO is supposed to be, more or less...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

Maybe, maybe not. I've had the thought that a lot of these Bladelock multiclass builds were all built around the problem that Blade Pact sucked and Hexblade was incredibly front loaded with terrible higher level features. So if you wanted to play that character archetype there was a ton of...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

At least in UA7, they'd removed the option to swap Invocations on level up. So those situational tier-based picks are permanent investments, which makes them far less attractive.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

In UA7, Agonizing Blast had the option to apply to it other Warlock cantrips. The thing is it was better for EB, because it applied to every hit, and you could only reassign which cantrip it was attached to when you leveled up. So it wasn't a very strong option unless you had another good reason...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

Yes, as well as weapon proficiency and access to the Mastery trait. D&D is not a game that rewards half measures. Why get up into melee and make a single weapon attack when you can stand back at a safe distance and spam empowered Eldritch Blasts? Blade Pact only keeps up with EB spam if you're...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

Yes, that's what I was trying to say, sorry for being unclear. Invocations like Otherworldly Leap will stay lowered, but others like Agonizing Blast might be raised to 2nd level to make it clear you're encouraged to start with a Pact invocation.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Warlock"

That's one of the few specific non-spell changes from UA7. But I did sort of notice a pattern to some of the invocation talk. The 2014 Warlock didn't get invocations at 1st level, and the Revised Warlock will. But they talked about raising the required level for some invocations, to prevent...

I saw one of the community reps say on the OneD&D reddit that it's coming later in the week, not today.
