    Advanced Player's Guide questions

Just finished posting my review: Review: “Advanced Player’s Guide” | Critical Hits But actual play is probably going to have to wait a bit. Maybe I can talk some people into a one-shot for the specific purpose of using them.

Thunderspire and the 5-minute adventuring day

I'm interested to hear if anyone's had the same experiences as Morrus. I'm getting ready to run Thunderspire for my group, and while they're pretty good at what they do, they're not so super-optimized that I don't worry. I'm pretty sure I'm going to use the "half hit points" for Thunderspire...

Zachary Houghton resigns as an ENnies judge

OK, back up a sec. I'm not saying I was infuriated at the Ennies. As I specifically said, I have a lot of respect for everyone involved in the Ennies. (If I didn't think they were important, I wouldn't have been liveblogging them, and possibly the only person to have done so.) But coming in...

Zachary Houghton resigns as an ENnies judge

Sure, I've heard the reason, but look at it from the point of view of someone whose website or podcast wasn't included... knowing the reason doesn't make it any less frustrating.

Zachary Houghton resigns as an ENnies judge

You're right, and my fault for implying otherwise. But print publishers generally have the expectation of making money as well, along with advertising budgets that involve giving away promotional copies.

Zachary Houghton resigns as an ENnies judge

It might not be quite so diplomatic of me to weigh in here because I have some conflicting issues in the whole matter, but I've got to say this: Bloggers and podcasters, as a whole, do it because we love it. There are some pockets of professionals who actively make money and have budgets to do...

D&D 4E Podcasts - Any Good Ones Around?

Here's my self-promotion for the day: The Critical Hits podcast (Podcast : Critical Hits) For 4e specifically, check out these interviews: Interview with Mike Mearls: Critical Hits Podcast #6: Interview with Mike Mearls : Critical Hits Interview with James Wyatt: Critical Hits Podcast #7...

    Halving Hitpoints

I'm planning on trying it out for Thunderspire Labryinth in a few weeks, but you may want to check this out: An essential 4e D&D house rule

Topic Of The Week 39, September, 2008

1 Million Swords I found this thread, "1 Million Swords", interesting and have nominated it accordingly for "Topic Of The Week 38, September, 2008"

An open letter to Randy Buehler

Randy was quite willing to back up his "D&D cred" at GenCon, first offering to tell us about his characters. I wouldn't be surprised if he posts about this issue specifically sometime soon.

How do you make effective game use of WotC's Dungeon Tiles?

I grapple with this issue too- I own one of every set, and really enjoy using them, but logistics is an issue. If I just have a few small encounter areas (non-dungeons, usually) I'll assemble them into a baggy with any other terrain pieces and monster miniatures. If I'm making my own dungeon...

    Let's talk about minions...

Can't resist the urge to show off one of my recent posts here: http://www.critical-hits.com/2008/08/25/adventure-design-seminar-gencon-2008/ It's a writeup from the Adventure Design seminar at GenCon, which has a really good section on using minions. After that, I've thought a lot about...

How often do you use the new templates?

Oddly, I haven't used them at all in 4e, but used them all the time in 3e. (and it hadn't occurred to me that I wasn't using them until I saw this thread.) I find that the uplevel/downlevel rules work just fine for everything I need.

    PHBIII and IV: Oriental Adventures?

Dark Sun seemed to be the book that all of R&D wanted to work on, so I wouldn't be surprised at all.

    Who Will Get the Axe?

That's really a shame... I met Mike at GenCon just one week ago, and he seemed like a really nice guy, and very honest. And he was doing all their video coverage too! Poor timing, to say the least. And Linae was always really nice and active around here. I wish them both the best in their next job.

DDXP to be in Pittsburgh next year

Same here, since our commute was probably roughly the same. Doesn't WotC realize how many ENWorlders are in this area? ;)

    Mearls: Druid a Striker/Controller (maybe?)

Yes, in the seminar I attended run by Mike Mearls (http://www.critical-hits.com/2008/06/30/mike-mearls-everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-fourth-edition/) he said that they were thinking Ranger would be a controller so that there would be 2 of each role in the core book, but it just didn't work...

    Not Enough "News From GenCon"

We tried hard to do serious coverage (relying on our twitter feed when we had to) but found that most of our time was being taken up with actually taking in the coverage to write it up during the con (and we occasionally played some games too.) But anyway, the link to all our coverage, which...

OK GenCOn ENWorlders, document your experiences here...

Even though we got a bag of free stuff (Thanks, Katie!) I still stopped by the WotC booth to buy the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, new Dungeon Tiles, and H2. The staff that I dealt with were super-friendly, even while keeping a big line moving. I guess the mood changes completely when they...
