In the games I played and heard about, there was a good amount of PCs using combat abilities in non-combat situations. At-will Mage Hand and Ghost Sound from the Wizard got used the most in that way from what I heard. Pulling down tents, distracting guards, and confusing bugbears all happened...

I'm pretty sure in the game I played with James Wyatt the Carrion Crawler took 2d6 damage when dropping from the ceiling. It's possible I'm misremembering though.

I doubt it, since they are Forgotten Realms characters, and were used for both the delves and the Living Forgotten Realms games.

That was one of the first things I noticed too. While I didn't mind the busier design of 3e, I much prefer the open whitespace.
