A Leap over Boiling Lava onto a Flying Wyvern

This is headed for tangent-town, but while all those examples you describes are degrees of success, there are almost never degrees of failure in D&D (critical failures being one exception), which is closer to what the original poster was talking about. It's certainly more interesting to have a...

A Leap over Boiling Lava onto a Flying Wyvern

I remember my low-level merchant in 2e Dark Sun shoving a Portable Hole into a Bag of Holding as a last ditch effort to stop a big beastie. Blown to bits, but I got some rolls to TRY and pull it off with at least an arm intact, and damn was it cool either way.

D&D Alumni: Cloakers! Cave Fishers! Babau!

I'm most excited about the kraken, myself. One of our favorite old monsters, and pretty excited about the version that can attack spelljammers in the Astral Sea. I was kind of hoping the elemental evil princes would be lower level so I could include them in my paragon level Temple of Elemental...

    The Skinny on Adventure Tools?

Well, GenCon always seems like the likely place to expect announcements of anything D&D (or gaming in general), but that's pure conjecture. Plus that doesn't always mean anything, as I personally was given a demo of the virtual game table and character visualizer two GenCons ago by three people...

    The Skinny on Adventure Tools?

Heh. I honestly got a kick out of that imaginary conversation :) So here's what I can tell you (and unfortunately, it's not much)... Chris Champagne is the Studio Manager of DDI, and a fairly recent hire (sometime late last summer). Under his watch especially, they're in the mode of not...

Hybrid Classes...Anybody seen a good one lately?

In the game I'm running, there is a Swordmage/Artificer who can spend several actions pumping up and become very difficult to hit with nearly any attack, and a Warlock/Paladin who does a lot of catch 22-type stuff. They both seem pretty effective, but also just retrained into hybrid at paragon...

What will Masterplan be after the C&D?

Also color me disappointed. Masterplan clearly is a lot of work, and has tons and tons of devoted fans... As far as I recall, those other sites didn't require DDI. Masterplan required DDI to do all the importing. Even if there was some kind of encryption problem with the data, it seems like the...

DMs: What Powers Do PCs Get That You Hate?

Come and Get It can just be wonky in terms of story- you have two bodyguards protecting an important non-melee badguy... and suddenly, you've pulled him into combat without having to roll, and mark him so he's not moving away. My latest annoyance has been the Healing Sun, the Radiant Servant 12...

    Going to Origins.

I'll be there! Kind of sad that there isn't more variety in the WotC stuff, but looking forward to trying Dresden Files RPG and a few others.

    Unconfirmed: More Layoffs at WotC

Huh? "Called on the carpet" by who?

    Unconfirmed: More Layoffs at WotC

I believe Steve Winter is still there as well, and I'd certainly consider him a big and established name.

    Unconfirmed: More Layoffs at WotC

Yeah, my hope is that some big software company offered him a lot of money, and not an actual lay-off as previously reported. I'm with you there!

    Unconfirmed: More Layoffs at WotC

Chris Sims just posted this on Twitter: http://twitter.com/ChrisSSims/status/13740775672 Andy Collins was pretty high up there in the D&D side, and often was a public face on R&D. That's big news.

What do we know of D&D Essentials?

I wrote that article and was there for the seminar, so maybe I can help? They described Solo mode as sort of a choose your own adventure thing that also generates your character as you go... like "You see some orcs, do you attack it with your dagger, blast it with a spell, or pray?" It's an...

Dark Sun Hopes & Dreams & Fears & Nightmares

Exactly how I feel. I guess I've never been a canon junky of any setting- I just want something that captures the feel that I remember with the rules I enjoy. And we already know Primordials are involved in the backstory- so if that's a dealbreaker, it's already done.

What actor would play your character?

David Tennant... but my Eladrin Wizard was based on Doctor Who in the first place.

Dark Sun Hopes & Dreams & Fears & Nightmares

In the Dark Sun seminar at DDXP, they mentioned the cosmology as being like the core cosmology, but that it's "not that far" from the original. The Feywild is related to the magic deserts and remaining forests, and the Shadowfell is the Gray. Dragonborn are Dray, and the Tieflings are there, but...

    GameMastery Flip-Mats

I have a bunch of the flip mats and use them often, but that's mainly because I hate/am really bad at drawing maps. Between them, dungeon tiles, poster maps, and Dwarven Forge, I tend to be set.
