D&D General here's how to stop jealousy in between lucky players and unlucky ones

Not to the degree I see online. When we start a new edition, we will often use point buy or standard arrays. Once we are familiar and comfortable with it, we tend to try rolling. We haven't had any problems, except with 4e where one player having something like 20, 18, 16, 14, 10, 9 after...

D&D General here's how to stop jealousy in between lucky players and unlucky ones

No, I disagree. I think it's entirely down to player attitude. 5e is extremely loose in balance. It just doesn't matter unless your players are going to be anxious about it. On the other hand, 4e you should absolutely never use rolled stats.

D&D General here's how to stop jealousy in between lucky players and unlucky ones

Point buy is unfortunately the best way to avoid this. If you like rolling stats, you have to accept that sometimes you will be the underdog. Some players like it, but with some it interferes with their fun too much.

D&D 5E (2024) So where are the higher tier feats?

The higher tier feats are called spells, just like always.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you let PC's just *break* objects?

It did make more sense when the spell lists included more tunneling spells than just Move Earth.

If you were going to build a Studio Ghibli/Zelda-flavored campaign, what elements would you include?

I can't imagine using D&D for either setting. Zelda to me feels like it would be better suited to using The One Ring instead of D&D. Both settings are typically about scattered light vs monolithic dark, and they're both settings that are very focused on journeys and exploration over just...

    How I'd fix Star Wars

Starting to reverse, undo, or progress this was one thing I liked about The Last Jedi. And I really like that. I loved the idea of "everyone can use The Force." Unfortunately, it was just about the only thing I liked about The Last Jedi. With my least favorite part being that the movie seemed to...

The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

Hey, now, be careful with that. Next thing you know you'll have your players asking to go on quests for things they want. You might actually create PCs that are really interested in adventuring and start driving the campaign themselves!

D&D 5E (2024) How to reign in full casters for 1D&D? Maybe remove 6th to 9th level spells as a Variant rule.

I guess my question is: What 6th-level spells are a problem? I've been quite vocal in the past that I think 7th-level and higher spells are broken -- either useless or overpowered or circumventing adventure structure in non-productive ways -- but I've not seen any 6th-level spells cause a...

D&D 5E (2024) Do you see Full Casters played at your Table?

We switched from D&D to Savage Worlds in late 2022, so the poll results are a little misleading for my "Yes" response. However, I have no reason to think that we would see any difference. Since 2014 in 5e, we've always had a Druid, Cleric, Wizard, Sorcerer, or Bard in a campaign. Usually more...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you let PC's just *break* objects?

Yeah, no. I find that neither reasonable, nor practical. The game would turn into a semantic and epistemic nightmare as you continually navigate the Two Generals Paradox. Really? You can get back to it immediately by following the backlinks. [NB: Your statement was in response to a quote of...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you let PC's just *break* objects?

If you want your character to take precise actions, you must speak precisely. If you wish to retain agency, be your own agent. If you act carelessly, how should anyone know that it wasn't intentional? And sure, you could play where the DM says: "You open the door and see a 20x20 foot room. In...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you let PC's just *break* objects?

I guess I feel like if you're in a situation where: a) The player says "I smash the vase" b) The vase has a trap of some kind c) None of the PCs has investigated the vase or whatever it's sitting on for a trap d) There's nothing in the area that the character would have noticed that the player...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you let PC's just *break* objects?

That's a better question. Is "break" totally nonsensical or literally unbreakable? For example, a lake, a sand dune, a mountain, an artifact, or possibly a relic? If yes, then my response is: What? No. [Impossible.] Is the object so large or durable that how it could be broken is not readily...

Ultramodern5 on Backerkit: An Interview with Chris Dias (Dias Ex Machina)

A friend of mine picked up the Ultramodern5 "Redux" book a few years ago. There's some really interesting core redesigns built in Ultramodern5. Ladders are basically a second class. Lifepaths offer expanded background design, like Traveller-lite. Archetypes (subclasses) are class-agnostic and...

D&D 5E (2014) What houserules do we assume is common in the community?

Technically, that's RAW. :D I usually just point out that RAW you're allowed to do this: Drop held item (free) Cast spell Pick up item from the ground (free object interaction) Technically, you can't do that if you're flying, but it covers so much that the "free hand" rule should never be a...

    Fantasy gaming that isn’t d20?

It's hard to recommend a system on the basis of "fantasy, but not d20" alone. Most other systems of note tend to focus on a particular style of play. What is it your table is looking for? How much crunch do you want or need? Savage Worlds (including Savage Eberron and Savage Pathfinder) uses...

D&D 5E (2014) Baldur's Gate 3 will allow us to explore the whole city of Baldur's Gate Seamlessly

I haven't played it -- I've never really cared for the BG series -- but #2, #3, and #4 just scream "I'm playing an early access game!" or "I'm playing a tech demo!" They need testing on certain elements and want players to give feedback on certain elements, so, yes, they feature those elements...

D&D General What Edition to Use? 1!

I agree with the "None of the above" conclusion. D&D isn't good for what you're suggesting. You might want to look at Dungeon Crawl Classics. That's a B/X-adjacent OSR system with a magic system that contains a modest element of danger every time it's used and variable spell outcomes. There has...
