    D&D 5E (2014) MM Ankheg Design

I am quite tempted to work out a Ankheg with working rear-mandible things. They look pretty awesome.

    D&D 5E (2014) wands

From the discussion we had on Scrolls some time ago, I seem to recall the Starter Set was actually using a later version of the rules than the Basic DM's Guide, so I would go with the Starter Set wording.

    D&D 5E (2014) Clay Golem HP Drain

Its a bit odd as well, in the Iron Golem description it specifically calls out 'Their iron bodies imprison the spirits that drive them, and are susceptible only to weapons imbued with magic or the strength of adamantine.' Then it goes and gives Clay Golems the exact same immunities...

D&D 5E (2014) Difference between critical hits and automatic hits.

Personally I think its been a really interesting thread. Its also been beneficial to me as I am now pretty sure I have been getting the rules wrong.

D&D 5E (2014) Difference between critical hits and automatic hits.

From twitter. @dr_hobo_jones : for the champions expanded crit range, are 18-19 automatically a hit? Or are they only crit if attack hits? @mikemearls : believe you get the auto hit and double damage @dr_hobo_jones : sweet

D&D 5E (2014) Questions about the 'new' Monster Math as compared to 3.x

A monster’s challenge rating tells you how great a threat the monster is. An appropriately equipped and well-rested party of four adventurers should be able to defeat a monster that has a challenge rating equal to its level without suffering any deaths. - basic DM's Guide 0.1, page 5. It does...

    D&D 5E (2014) Clay Golem HP Drain

True. Of course it gets even worse if the players kill you before you get your next turn. But tbh, regardless of efficiency, it just feels wrong.

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock Pact Weapon and Sentient Weapons

I disagree tbh. You have a paragraph about making pact weapons. You then have a second paragraph about moving pact weapons into extra dimensional spaces. The mention of Artifact and Intelligent weapons is in this latter paragraph. So by the normal rules of grammar, you would expect it to be...

D&D 5E (2014) Questions about the 'new' Monster Math as compared to 3.x

The Challenge 1/2 means that two of them should be a hard encounter for a level 1 party of 4 PCs...

    D&D 5E (2014) Clay Golem HP Drain

I am more irritated by the fact they kept its haste Ability as taking up an Action, so it actually ends up with less attacks when it uses it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Clay Golem HP Drain

/Shrug. Supposedly the ability originally came about due to a typo anyway, it was supposed to be that Clay Golems could only be healed by High Level Clerics, but it got misinterpreted that you needed a High Level Cleric to heal the damage they had done. Which is way the ability never really...

D&D 5E (2014) The Divine Domain of 'Magic'

I think to be honest, 'Magic' is far to broad a concept to be made into a Domain. The existing seven domains are really subsets of Magic anyway. What you are basically choosing do you want tor cleric to be good at Life magic, Nature magic, Knowledge magic, War magic et al. Having a player...

    Help Converting a couple monsters

Attack bonus looks right to me, I cant see why the Ac would be higher either. Challenge 2 (450 xp) seems right, maybe borderline challenge 3 (700 xp) because of the abilities.

    Help Converting a couple monsters

Thankfully not, no. Just Attack Rolls and Ability Checks. - In fact you could speculate this is precisely why they made Saves their own separate thing to stop powers like this being utterly horrid.

    Help Converting a couple monsters

It doesn't make much sense to me that the save DC should be based upon Con tbh. I went with Wis. Looking at the AD&D profile (which I think is probably a more interesting basis than the 3.5 one), it should have 2 attacks and the Zombify can also be an effect of its poison aura. So maybe this...

    Help Converting a couple monsters

How about: Zombify (Recharge 5–6). The zombie lord targets one creature it can see within 30 feet of it. If the target can see the zombie lord, it must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw against this magic or become Poisoned. While the creature retains the Poisoned condition, at the...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone who got an mm at Gencon want to offer up spoilers to us?

It pretty much looks like they have gone right back to the original version of almost every monster in the game.

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

Unless you like dying a lot, you really want to avoid fighting things with the same Challenge as your level. Challenge 2 doesn't mean 'this is an appropriate encounter for a level 2 party', it means 'this monster can't kill a level 2 character in a single round unless it rolls crits'.

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

A war horse did not, but otherwise, yes that is a fair point. It will actually be interesting to see what rules the DMG has for Henchmen: If they end up costing XP or actually working like Animal Companions it would change a lot of assumptions. Yes, but 4e was built on a different action...

D&D 5E (2014) I for one hope we don't get "clarification" on many things.

Nah, I am pretty sure it means where you put your books on the shelf.
