    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

You see I think the whole baseline premise of 'a Beast Master Ranger with an animal companion should be equivalent to any other character' is fundamentally flawed. A Beast Master Ranger should be the equivalent of any other character that has a henchman, or a horse, or whatever. A mounted...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

Ok. So if we rewrite the class feature, with your proposed changes will it stack up? Ranger’s Companion At 3rd level, you gain a beast companion that accompanies you on your adventures and is trained to fight alongside you. Choose a beast that is no larger than Medium and that has a challenge...

    D&D 5E (2014) Making Monsters Interesting!!

Its worth noting that a creature can still grapple if you want it too, it is just that most creatures no longer auto grapple - which often slowed down play.

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

The problem is not that people are assuming the companion will not do anything, the problem is that the rules actually say the companion will not do anything. 'It takes its turn on your initiative, though it doesn’t take an action unless you command it to.' 'You can use your action to verbally...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

I agree that using the 'animal companion rules for controlled mounts' is a much better option than using the rules from the Animal Companion Beast Master feature. But the fact that you are much better off ignoring the class feature and using the rules available to everyone else instead, does...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

I think the problem is, that it is a class that seems built to fit in a certain game style that, in my opinion, most people just do not run. The crux of the matter comes down to 'If you play a Fighter (Battle Master) and buy a Mastiff (25 gp in the price list) - how is the Mastiff handled...

Converting D&D Next Monsters from Murder in Baldur's Gate and Legacy of the Crystal Shard

From what I remember, most of the stuff in Murder in Baldur's gate was NPCs, so should be pretty easy to do using the NPC appendix in the Basic DM's document.

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone who got an mm at Gencon want to offer up spoilers to us?

Subtypes are only used by things that refer to them explicitly, normally magic items. So there may well be an Axe of Titan Slaying that does 2d6 damage when it hits creatures with the titan subtype, for example.

D&D 5E (2014) Cleric Domains and Turn Undead

I don't see why, everyone knows they just rise again at midnight. ;o)

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

You seem to have confused the meaning of 'comparable' and 'directly comparable'. Of course they are comparable, but without adding the Ability damage you are going to have to take that into account. The obvious way is by looking at Average Damage, or if your a more poetic mindset, you could...

    D&D 5E (2014) Some spells _really_ powerful?

Except you don't add your Ability Mod to damage. Which means they are not directly comparable unless all your Abilities are 10.

    D&D 5E (2014) So...warlocks?

It's also worth bearing in mind you are likely to find way more magic weapons than magic doodads that increase Eldritch blast.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5 e sailing speeds

It's always an awkward matter because ships often don't sail at their full speed for 24 hours of the day, so a lot of the time the speed you see in an approximate average trying to take into account darkness, wind-speed, having to take supplies, etc, etc. Your probably better of just having...

    D&D 5E (2014) Necromancer Games 5E Monster Teaser #2 - The Aranea!

The D&D Next play-test version has Spellcasting as an Variant Rule, which I personally think was much better than having to run a whole race of Wizards. I must admit, the 3.5 paradigm of always fighting spell-casters is one of the things I will be happy to see the back of.

Warlocks do not count as spell-casters for the purposes of that table.
