    D&D 5E (2014) The all-inclusive 4/5E DDI

The big difference between this DRM and what Blizzard and EA are doing is the majority of people don't need to bypass the DRM, only one person, which will happen. Consider the current state of affairs; in order to pirate, say, Heroes of Shadow, someone would need to cut off the spine of a book...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

I have problems with Essentials, and I really wish Wizard's hadn't gone down this path. However, compatibility isn't one of those problems. I've seen multiple groups with a mix of Essentials and Classic classes with no compatibility issues. I've seen mixed results with this approach. My teen...

CB's biggest failing by far: No custom content possible

Good point. One can instead dance between "you can't copyright game rules" and "you can't use WotC trademarks and other IP". That's not a dance I'm comfortable with, either as an individual developer or doing it as a company project, without IP lawyer oversight. And that's my core point, that...

CB's biggest failing by far: No custom content possible

You don't think that's maybe because the GSL prohibits such products?

    Anything new regarding D&D ebooks?

It's impossible to know for sure, but I don't imagine it's had much of an impact. With some stores allowed to sell books before the official release date, we're seeing bookmarked and OCR'd pirated PDFs available by the release date.

    Anything new regarding D&D ebooks?

source I wouldn't expect to ever see a legal option for PDF books. DRM is digital snake-oil, there will never be an effective DRM scheme. Content publishers either don't release their content electronically at all, release with with a DRM fig-leaf to give the technologicallly illiterate suits...

The Problem of DDI...Solved! (Well, not really)

Yes. I love making up characters. I consider it kind of a sub-hobby. However, in nearly 3 decades of playing I haven't come across a game where making characters without electronic aid is quite as painful as 4e. Sure, if you know pretty much what powers, feats, etc you're going to take it's not...

    Ampersand: 2011 releases officially gutted

How it will be dealt with might just be more bad news. If the canceled content (and similar future content) winds up as Dragon articles or as ebooks in PDF or some other format I'd personally be content with that (YMMV). If it winds up as database entries in the compendium, then that would be a...

D&D 4E [4E Players, mainly] Ever thought of defecting to Pathfinder?

Nah. I stopped buying 4e books around the release of Psionic Power, as WotC was releasing books in which I have no interest. I also canceled my DDI subscription as I found I wasn't getting any value from it. This recent announcement canceled the one book I was going to buy, leaving me nothing...

    New Character Builder from WotC!

Rather than copy and paste an earlier post, I'll just link to it. And I do this without snark; it's easy to miss a few posts in a thread this large.

    New Character Builder from WotC!

Nope. All the business logic, which in an app like a character builder is going to be a large amount of code, could be easily reused. If it was written properly in the first place, it could be reused as is. They'd have to rewrite the interface, to be sure, but looking at the on-line builder this...

    New Character Builder from WotC!

Keeping in mind that .NET is also a web-development framework, and they'd be able to leverage all that work, experience and the rest while making a web-app, I'm going to stick with my position that choosing Silverlight was wasting an opportunity. As an aside, I'm not personally fond of using...

    New Character Builder from WotC!

The Silverlight strategy ignores the explosive growth in the tablet market. It is not a long-term strategy. The Gartner Group published this press release earlier this month: Gartner to CEOs: Seize the iPad Opportunity Now. Here are a couple choice quotes: WotC can ignore the way the market...

    New Character Builder from WotC!

I run a small firm specializing in web-based business applications, so I thought I'd offer some counter-points. It's true that is isn't a matter of just adding on another hard-drive. However, even with everything else factored in storage is cheap. One of the sites my company designed and is...

November 16th release for Web-based Character Builder

There are WotC personnel who read and post here, including in this thread. Some of the concerns raised in this thread have already been taken to the development team.

November 16th release for Web-based Character Builder

How about a desire to have all your characters in one place? A desire to take advantage of one of the stated benefits of this new system, access to all your characters from any (Windows/Mac only) computer anywhere you go, work, home, school, library, your friend's place, etc? How about simply...

November 16th release for Web-based Character Builder

The last time I stayed at a hotel with free internet it was worth every penny I paid for it. It ranged from painful to impossible to use. And it was a decent hotel.
