I did. V5 gives me the impression of trying to copy Feed and failing. I’ll pass.

If I understand correctly, Nightbane is a dark superheroes setting where you play as one of the good monsters trying to stop the bad ones from enslaving humanity. It sounds alright. I'm surprised it isn't more popular given how readily gameable the premise is.

I suspect this has more to do with RPGs being based on violent conflict resolution rather than a weakness of the genre itself. Food supply isn't the only limit. There's also things like the logistics of keeping a criminal conspiracy secret. The more members, the more difficult it is to keep...

I was just describing shapeshifters in a general sense. I’m not against ecoterrorism as a concept for play, I’m just dissatisfied that it’s the only option. (I know Forsaken provides another option, but it’s almost equally dogmatic and basically the same game with some tweaks.) If I was...

I prefer having more settings overall and having more modular settings. The community/market basically funnels you into World of Darkness, and I just don’t like those games. They have much more baked into them than just vampires, werewolves, and w/e. For example: all the vampires follow the...

Sorry. I'm the sort of person who thoughtlessly comments on trivia.

Yeah. There are ton of 90s urban fantasy games that I thought had interesting ideas and I'm frustrated that they're now essentially dead and unsupported by any communities beyond a few lingering fans (if that). Nephilim, Immortal: Invisible War, WitchCraft, The Everlasting, Nightlife, probably a...

Fair enough. My favorite vampire game is Feed and the mechanics are built from the ground up to support its intended themes. It works completely differently from traditional designs (e.g. all characters have 16 traits rather than arbitrary numbers of attributes, skills, etc) and I can't think...

Has anyone tried Monte Cook's The Strange, Invisible Sun, or whatever he produces that is urban fantasy-adjacent?

At this point in time, what I want to do is explore my creativity and design more “night worlds” (as Night Shift names individual settings, not necessarily horror-oriented). Or go further and design smaller modular bits that can be dropped into an existing compatible night world. For example, I...

I’d prefer to make my own rules rather than try forcing WoD thru a differently shaped hole. I’d need to rewrite everything anyway, so why make things more difficult for myself? WoD is basically horrible for anything that isn’t WoD. You don’t need more than one universal system with flavor...

I’ve had several ideas for worldbuilding urban fantasy. One idea I had was basically to flesh out the conceit in Urban Arcana that magical creatures were immigrants from other planets. In UA the “Shadow” force wipes their memories, but I had this idea for that not to happen and for these other...

Fair enough, but I'm not about games that generalized. I'm taking about a specific genre. I assume that a genre-specific toolbox would not suffer from the same issues. For comparison, Mutants & Masterminds is designed to simulate superheroes but the rules aren't tied to any particular campaign...

I'd love to have a subforum for the urban fantasy genre. I think there used to be more hosted forums for publishers here but for some reason the software update hid them all (but they're still there if you're able to find them). There are so many ways to flavor both, too. With urban fantasy...

This thread is for discussing anything in the genre. Anything. A Scooby gang fighting the creatures of the night while muggles remain ignorant of the danger. A vampire detective solving cases while trying to forget their abusive vampire dad/lover. A lost fairy princess trying to make a name for...

How have you used dragon parts in recipes?

Some Chinese, Korean, and Serbian fairy tales include stories of various creatures (e.g. humans, koi, snakes, roosters, rams) ascending to dragons. The means might include acquiring a dragon’s pearl, a wishing stone, jumping the dragon’s gate, or living a really long time.

How have you used dragon parts in recipes?

Medieval bestiaries are full of medicinal uses for animal parts both real and imagined. I find it really odd that this hasn't filtered into more fantasy fiction and gaming outside of Harry Potter and Monster Hunter.
