[UPDATED] Here's Mike Mearls' New D&D 5E Initiative System

"Hung up"? No. I simply wouldn't use the mechanic if it is as it appears to me in the OP description. If people were to invest emotionally enough to be "hung up", I can clearly see the origin. Part of the OP stated that this was faster according to Mearls and there have been a few reasons...

    D&D 5E (2014) Looking for Guides

There is a collection of guides pinned near the top of this board that includes Wizard and Warlock builds.

The Toughest Part of Dungeon Mastering........well to me at least.

I think the toughest part for many is keeping track of everything especially in combat. It's easy to forget or overlook an effect here or a creature's legendary attack there. For me the toughest part is improvising when the party runs off on a tangent I didn't expect. For this reason I may...

[UPDATED] Here's Mike Mearls' New D&D 5E Initiative System

Am I reading this right? This sounds like you will have to know your action before each initiative roll. If this is the case, what happens if circumstances change before your turn in that round effecting what action you want to take? What else could you do but continue in the same order...

D&D 5E (2014) What are good magic items for a monk?

I happen to be playing a Wood Elf Monk (Way of the Open Hand) in an on going Tales From the Yawning Portal campaign now and had this very question last night. The question came up because I noticed that of the 7 party members all levels 4 or 5, my character was the only one without a magic...

    D&D 5E (2014) WAVE ECHO CAVE

I used no player map for this area and it worked out fine. They got a small visual that I drew when the Ochre Jelly surprised them but that was it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-stealth surprise

Like I said, in the right situation. That example would not be one.

I Discovored D&D Later In Life Than I Would Have Liked And I Worry That....

I picked up D&D again after 30 years in my late 40's. If you lose the itch, it shouldn't be a "concern" because it typically means you have replaced it with other interests which satisfy you. If at some point after replacing it you truly become "sad" due to its absence, you can always come...

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-stealth surprise

I think I would allow it based on the outcome of a deception check versus the guards perception in the right situation. If the guards are really suspicious they would do things like disarm the party before escorting them and might have their weapons drawn. In that situation there probably...

D&D 5E (2014) On Saving Throws (a Monster Manual Analysis)

Your analysis has merit and should be applauded. I am not saying the conclusions are wrong. However, it still only analyzes by comparing an all encompassing generalized view of all save types isolated to individual text book hypotheticals. It is not measuring results from actual play of a...

D&D 5E (2014) On Saving Throws (a Monster Manual Analysis)

This analysis is interesting but it's really in a vacuum. Unless I misread the OP, it doesn't consider how often a particular save may come up or what types of monsters may be heavy in a particular campaign which would effect how often certain saves occur.

D&D 5E (2014) Campaign being throw out after a year

It feels like there is no going back to the old campaign at this point based on your description of the situation but if half of your group isn't enjoying the new adventure, it sounds like the best solution is to begin another new adventure. This would ideally be if the DM agrees and all sit...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dying House Rule

Ok. I am not in disagreement with any of this. It's never a big deal to make the rules work in any way that works best for your game unless you are playing AL. My original comment was my personal preference based on my personal experiences in 5E.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dying House Rule

Wow, dude. Sorry, didn't mean to imply you were "wrong" just that I saw it differently. It's just my opinion and not personal. Like my last sentence reads ....one is certainly always welcome to House Rule it any way they feel works best for their game. As far as "5E is working is some...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dying House Rule

I don't think you are supposed to like it. It is my understanding of the game that a DM should allow the creature to act the way it was intended (or implied based on the DM's assessment) based on description, alignment, and RAW. The DM's personal preferences should not influence that one way...

D&D 5E (2014) How to bring back Dungeon Magazine and Dragon Magazine - Crate Edition

Just my opinion so take it for what it's worth. I can read Dragon magazine free here http://www.dragonmag.com/5.0/#!/articles/106375 I prefer buying pre-painted bricks for my figures. I don't use Monster Tokens I probably already have all the dice I will ever need and see no reason for...

D&D 5E (2014) A change of perspective: From DM to Player

I finally got to experience 5th Edition as a player after 5 months of being only a DM. That change of perspective has helped me to be a more well rounded DM in my opinion. I also feel the DM experience has helped me to be a more well rounded player. Now I am the DM of a regular weekly game...
