D&D 5E (2014) Ranged party member keeps running off the map

If the issue is that he is literally off the physical map you use to play the game, I would not personally consider it a huge issue as long as I know which direction he is relative to the map and position relative to a focal point on that map. Theater of the mind should be fine given that...

    D&D 5E (2014) DM not roleplaying much

I was shy and apprehensive about role-playing as a DM and player but have tried to embrace it as I feel it only enhances game play. I am normally not very good at improvisation either. If you've ever met me I often come across as dry and unemotional, even uncaring in certain situations but...

Frequent short sessions vs infrequent long sessions

I personally prefer playing at a regular day and time every week both as a DM and a player. When it's a regular thing, people will tend to want to keep it in that same time frame because they don't have to think about it. Most of us work around structured times: work, exercise, eating meals...

    Weekend vs. Weekday

It's going to vary. I personally play a regular weekly game on Monday nights and DM a regular game on Sunday afternoons. If available time manifests, I play one-shot AL games on Saturday afternoons or evenings. I also know the local hobby store where I play has every table full in advance for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Suggestions for a multi-level adventure

This is almost exactly where I was about 7 months ago. I am ridiculously terrible at creating a story or campaign but I'm decent at telling one at least in 5th edition D&D. I started my first 5E campaign (first ever as a DM) with Lost Mine of Phandelver because it seemed like a good adventure...

D&D 5E (2014) Running Tales from the Yawning Portal as a single campaign

I am a player in TFYP right now and from the beginning we were told by the DM this would be strung together as one campaign. We just finished Forge of Fury last night and we have simply gone back and forth between the dungeon and the town on foot so far. As far as how you want to do it, I...

    D&D 5E (2014) DM not roleplaying much

Have you tried talking to your DM and telling him/her exactly what you said in this thread? If you have and you were ignored, then perhaps it's time to move on to another DM if the current game is not enjoyable for you. Just be sure your DM understands what you and the other players want from...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dwarf Ruins/Dungeon

I am currently playing Forge of Fury so I can second DEFCON 1's suggestion. I am also currently DMing the Southcrypt series so I can second aco175's suggestion. There are 3 Southcrypt Adventures available for download from the DM's Guild. Just type in "Southcrypt" on Search and you will see...

"Other Resources" and Volo's Guide to Monsters

On Page 1 of the AL Player's Guide it states Additional options for characters are available in the 5th Edition Player's Handbook, the Swordcoast Adventurer's Guide, the Elemental Evil Player's Companion, and Volo's Guide to Monsters . It is curious that the Monster Manual is not mentioned in...

    D&D 5E (2014) I cast Hold Person on a bar of soap...

I believe Prestidigitation can probably counter all of that. No spell slot required. :)

D&D 5E (2014) So long and thanks for all the fish!

I find that it really does depend on me and how accepting or non-accepting I am of the endless variety of reactions you can get to thread posts. By acceptance I do not mean agreement but simply allowing others to be as they are right or wrong. It's not like everyone is going to like most of...

Campaigns: How long is too long?

When the Party and the DM collectively decide it's gone on long enough. As for the campaign I currently DM, I have told the players that we can take it as far and as long as everyone wants. They are currently all at level 5 and I have told them I currently have material that would get them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Wizard/Cleric Melee possible?

Of course it's possible. You won't be as effective as many other builds as a front line combatant but it's certainly possible.

D&D 5E (2014) Monks of the Old Order in the Forgotten Realms

Thanks. This seems to be what I am seeing and I wanted to be sure I hadn't overlooked something that was out there already on the Old Order.

New DM Screen Coming In September

This is likely what Mercer was cryptic about in his fireside chat last week explaining only "guess you'll find out in September".

D&D 5E (2014) Do you time your players in combat?

He has only used this a couple of times that I can recall and neither were for an actual combat. Once was for escaping a rapidly approaching lava flow after a combat and the other I recall was to escape a chamber rapidly filling with sand. Yes, I have seen all 95 episodes that have aired, in...

D&D 5E (2014) Monks of the Old Order in the Forgotten Realms

I made a Way of the Open Hand Monk behind the idea of the Old Order. The issue I'm having is that there isn't a whole lot of anything that I can find on the order other than this from The Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting published by Wizards of the Coast 2001: "Monks of the Old Order do not...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you time your players in combat?

I do not impose a specific time limit on players taking their turn in combat. However I will ask them to move it along, forcefully if necessary, if they start to be an obvious drag on the combat rhythm and flow. I also do not allow cell phone text or talk at the table unless it is a legitimate...

How crucial is to have a map?

The question was "How crucial is it to have a map?" Whether maps or "pictures" enhance playability is a different question than the OP question I answered. I think most would rather have access to maps than not but I fall short of saying they are crucial to every campaign.
