    D&D 4E 4E feats vs Essential Feats. A list?

4e is 4e and a feat is a feat. Essentials didn't change any of that. Yeah, some of the new feats make some of the old feats pretty much a waste of time. So my advice to you is: Don't take feats that are a waste of time. Yeah, it'd be nice if WotC made a list somewhere of the useless feats, but...

    Clerics Hurting to Heal

Do warpriest not get healing word? Because I thought they did. But yes, in Divine Power (which means you'll need PHB1 as well) you'll find the Pacifist Cleric, which sounds like just what you're looking for.

    The Despair Deck

"Another instance might be, perhaps a place where a dark blood ritual once ended horribly, players would only draw from a deck comprised of Madness and Fear cards, but not Apathy – you get the picture." Meaning, you can totally have a Deck of Apathy. (And I'm SO EXCITED about that. (Or am I...

    The Despair Deck

Come on people, you've GOT to be excited about this! For no other reason than the sublime hilarity of being excited about something called a "deck of apathy"! Seriously, that's irony gold.

Using a readied action to double up sneak attacks. How acceptable? How palateable?

Huh. Sounds right to me. Except that you can only trigger on observable actions, so "the start of their turn" is out as a trigger (but "if any enemy tries to leave their square or make an attack" is, I think, allowable and just as good.) Honestly, I never saw the point behind giving rogues SA...

Speeding Up Combat #2 - Blame the Players!

I'm not saying get one of those 60 second sand timers and auto-delay them the moment the last grain falls. There are considerations to be made, not a hard and fast rule. When it's a tense situation and EVERY other player at the table is hanging on each mumbled word as the player ruminates the...

Speeding Up Combat #2 - Blame the Players!

I hear that a lot: "skip their turn". I think that's a bit much. I tell my players "you delay". Then, at least, they have the option to jump back in, assuming they ever do decide what they're doing. You delay my game, I delay your turn. Seems fair.

    Avenger with Spiked Chain

And what is the name and wording of this feat that gives brutal 3? If it does also work on falchions, then that's clearly the way to go: you can put vorpal on a heavy blade. (Which would mean OMG INF1N1T3 D4M4G3!!!11!!)

    "Quick Change" (Master Spy) Question

Sounds like your player stopped reading after the word "ally" and before the phrase "for the purposes of...". He is NOT actually the enemy's ally, he is only considered as such for CERTAIN and SPECIFIC purposes, listed in the power. Your interpretation is the correct one (although I agree that...

    Wizards "Character Generation" Article

Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (Character Generation) Okay, fine article. I only have one question: how would the advice be any different when teaching 30 year-olds who haven't played an RPG before? (I get that kids are more likely to try new things and that...

    It's bliss... almost.

That sounds awesome! I ran an Angel (the 9th level one) as a level 1 solo. The only hiccup was that one of the templates I applied added a reactive "target cannot attack this creature" attack... which, in a solo fight, means "target can't attack at all", and totally taking out one character...

FS 4th ed books - need new home

Not in the market to buy, but, if shipper pays, and you're doing media rate, then why only the lower 48? AK and HI are no more expensive via US PS (thank GOD for the US PS) and require no extra effort. I shipped about 200 pounds of books when I moved up here (including my 4e books) and...

    newbie DM has questions

I've read through Kyber's Harvest, and it seems like a great little self-contained module. I've run Keep on the Shadowfell more than once, but I am much less impressed with it. (To be fair, it was the first module, so there was a lot of things they were still figuring out. The lowlights: Watch...

    Armor Class Question, HELP!

+9 or 10 at 3rd level? Sounds about right. (+4 or 5 dex +3 dagger +1 for being a rogue with a dagger +1 for level.) But if your players equate "doing lots of damage" with "effective character", then expect all the others to envy the rogue, the monk, and to a lesser extent (depending how it's...

    Fortune Cards Threads [Merged]

I have a (fair!) pair of 2d6s that include an 8 on one face. Always a hoot to see people's faces when that comes up. (And yes, the pair is actually fair. 1/6 chance of a 7, 1/36 of a 2 or 12, etc.)

    Class Compendium: Gone?

I do not understand the logic here. If you really don't like essentials, why would you buy them at all? How does having a book that makes it clear how to mix-and-match essentials bits (that you hate!) with initial 4e bits (that you love!) make it, in any way, more desirable to you? Why would you...

What exactly does "not seamlessly" mean

I offer you an emphatic MEH. Boohoo, you can't take Cleaving Stance so I guess you'll have to suffer with... Cleave. Which works out to have the same effect in over 95% of cases. Same with Reaping Stance and Reaping Strike, etc. etc. etc.. The reason you can't take both is so you can't...

    Converting Monsters to Essential

There isn't an "essentials style" to monsters. After MM2, the _format_ of monster stats was changed, but the information contained in them is the same. There have been a few mathematical tweaks, the biggest being a damage boost for paragon and epic monsters, and most of the solos were re-written...

    Tension in combat

I think that a class based around an idea like this could be a lot of fun. The thief or assassin would have been an excellent place to try something like this. On the other hand, I don't know if I could deal with more "DnD is WoW" (or "DnD is Diablo") haters ;) Two great ideas. The first, I...

    Tension in combat

A line from the assassin design diary caught my eye: "With D&D combat, the tension is highest at the beginning of the fight (when players and monsters have a full array of resources) and lowest near the end (when players are out of resources and monsters are dwindling)." Other than this new...
