    D&D 5E (2024) Do We Really Need Levels 11-20?

Normally what I see is a more narrative thing. "This character's things are all resolved." Not so much a mechanical thing. "I'm tired of this build." Of course, I played for years with a guy who flat didn't run to narrative resolutions, and I got tired of that--it's probably most of why I let...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do We Really Need Levels 11-20?

My experience is that even when players have new character ideas they wanna poke at, they're usually really invested in the characters they're playing, and they want to see those characters get some things resolved before moving on.

    D&D 5E (2024) Do We Really Need Levels 11-20?

Funny. I've never needed to end a campaign to do something new, but my campaigns do tend to be free-written PC-driven picaresques.

    D&D 5E (2024) Do We Really Need Levels 11-20?

It plausibly comes to who decides to end the campaign and why. The sense I get is that most of the time it's the GM, and in the case of D&D it's usually because they don't want to run any higher level than [X]. I'm homebrewing my campaigns all the way to 20th level (in the current case with Epic...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do We Really Need Levels 11-20?

I think writing adventures for high-level play is probably harder than for low-level play, simply because the characters have greater and more varied capabilities. I more or less free-write as I GM, so I only need to account for the PCs I have, not all the PCs I could possibly have (if that...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do We Really Need Levels 11-20?

I think "the levels people normally play" are more or less "the levels there's the most support/materials for." Of course, I enjoy running high-level D&D, so I'm definitely something of an outlier.

    D&D 5E (2024) Do We Really Need Levels 11-20?

In my experience play doesn't really feel all that epic at 11th level. Maybe starting around 13th or 15th.

    D&D 5E (2024) Do We Really Need Levels 11-20?

I've run two 1-20 campaigns over the past seven-ish years. Those levels--and play in them--haven't really been all that well-supported, but we've muddled through. My own thinking is that so few campaigns get there because there's so little support, and I think writing more support for high-level...

I think it probably predates fandoms, too. Seems an awful lot like the standard approach to heresy, once the orthodoxy has been established.

I'd probably broaden "get into the woods" some, but I like me some stark landscapes. That's not really an argument, of course.

I haven't done the research to answer "typically," but these didn't last 38,000 miles.

The weight's the big factor, as I understand it, but the way they accelerate--all the torque they put down--makes a difference, too. I think.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

So, this past weekend was deeply unpleasant and wildly expensive, and I'm going to rant a little. Feel free to skip. A windstorm blew through here Sunday afternoon about four, and apparently it knocked a tree or a large branch into something really important, because it took like twenty hours...

GMs: How Much Do You Curate Your Adventures To Your Specific PCs, Mechanically Speaking

I run entirely homebrew, and I'll absolutely write the narrative situations so they're relevant and interesting to the PCs. I don't specifically aim mechanical things at either the PCs' strengths or their weaknesses, it's up to the players to figure out how to accomplish things. (I will warn the...
