D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

I don’t know what WM idea, but I agree on who has to track everything.

    D&D 5E (2024) How you going to roll... 5.24 into your game(s)?

As a player, I’ll do whatever the DM wants. As a DM, I’ll keep running 3.5e. Some of my players rabidly prefer it, others don’t care what the rules are.

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

Obviously a preference/taste thing. For you random rolled stats are so seriously bad, you refuse to play that way. For me, rolled stats are more fun because of the randomness. When I DM, it’s 4d6 drop lowest, place in any order. And you can reroll if any stat is 6 or lower - you failed the...

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

I had a player roll 3 18’s, with two witnesses. It was mathematically amazing, and fun for our group to have a gifted character. Life doesn’t give balanced talents, so D&D having randomized abilities makes sense to me.

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

Some players may help, but not all. Some anecdotes… One of my players - who’s been in my 3.5e game for 20 years, and is currently DMing his own 3.5e game - still gets confused over how many actions he can take in a round. He often tries to do about 1.5 rounds worth because he gets so excited...

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

I don’t mind playing 5e. Doesn’t enthuse me or annoy me much. It’s been 20 years since I played AD&D and more than a decade since 4e, so by default 5e seems to be my second favorite, perhaps a tie with PF1. I much prefer 3.5e (Core rules only), and I agree it needs a level cap. E6 says at...

Yes and … digital subscriptions, not sales, I think. MBA’s love their recurring revenue and DLC’s.

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

At least part of the issue is I memorized tons of rules from AD&D 1e and 3/3.5e. For 5e, I get it enough to play, but not to DM it accurately without having to look things up. And 5.24 throws in doubt what I know of 5e. New editions = new cognitive load from a changed UI. Edition changes...

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

What it means is we understand people don’t like us, but attempts to shut us up won’t succeed. Well that’s the theory, but the reality is they do work. Because of the hostility here, I take several month breaks a few times a year. Why I return and post again is a mystery to me.

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

I still DM 3.5e, but it’s a ton of work. I definitely couldn’t run a once a week game, but we haven’t done that since college. Once a month is a relatively frequent game among folks I know.

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

Yeah, I play 5e, in a 5 player campaign and in BG3, but I won’t DM it. What was that thread about feeling left out with 5e & in ENworld discussions? Very true. I know as a Gen X gamer who played all the editions and thinks this one is only OK, I’m not wanted. That WotC conspicuously left our...

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

Trying to get people off pen & paper and onto their digital assets, perhaps. Make the DM’s go digital, and they make the players go digital. Complexity overtaxing DM attention for the win!

In my opinion, that’s an opinion. :) The guy who wrote Elfish Gene saw it kind of like you. But that wasn’t my experience with AD&D.

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

True. I’m thinking the metric system of 10x 6 second rounds is logical and fits movement well, but too much is happening in a round. Maybe 12-second rounds would work, but I don’t think WotC cares about this. Ah, my bad. Yes, there are tons of potions in BG3. I scrounge and sell every...

D&D General 5.5 and making the game easier for players and harder for DMs

I don’t like it. For pace of play, having more free actions slows each characters turn and more effects to manage is more of a tax on the DM’s attention. For grindiness - interminable combats that make the game boring - 4e had long fights where damage was low compared to HP with so many...

D&D 5E (2024) GREYHAWKCONFIRMED! Reflections on Greyhawk in the DMG

#5 is the only one I reject in my Greyhawk. I think rejecting #5 (or 4-5 onwards) is common, so the reset to 576 CY (~1-4) is to a version every Greyhawk fan feels either is or was “real” for them.

D&D 5E (2024) GREYHAWKCONFIRMED! Reflections on Greyhawk in the DMG

True, I suppose. But the “only the current edition is D&D, everything earlier is bad” attitude turns off potential customers like me.

    D&D 5E (2024) Check Out The New Dungeon Master's Guide's Greyhawk Map

What I mean is not my specific outcomes, but using some of the many inherent, brewing conflicts in Greyhawk to do what makes sense in our home campaign instance of Greyhawk. I think he especially would have liked that the outcomes of Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, G123D123Q1, and TOEE by my players...

D&D General D&D Editions: Anybody Else Feel Like They Don't Fit In?

It is indeed a matter of taste. Unlimited magic doesn’t work for me thematically, and I think it wrecks the logistics aspect of the game. I still view D&D as a partially wargame, as it originally was, and a wargame without logistics isn’t much of a wargame.
