D&D 5E (2014) How Do Monks Survive At Low Levels?

Yeah, but the Mobile lets me do that every round of every combat, which is great, though it suffers from diminishing returns as you gain levels, as mellored pointed out. Frankly, I'd like to hear some field reports from people who have actually played a monk with or without this feat. I am...

D&D 5E (2014) How Do Monks Survive At Low Levels?

This would be great if every combat lasted only 1 round. Unfortunately, that hasn't been my experience. Wait, are you saying that the ability to deny an opponent's reaction lasts the entire combat? If so, I don't recall seeing that and I'm currently away from my books.

    November's SAGE ADVICE Is Here!

Yup, that's part of it. What's your point?

The big difference is that all of these options cost ki, which is a limited resource, while Mobility is usable every round of every combat.

This costs ki, which is a limited resource, especially at low levels, so it lacks reliability.

D&D 5E (2014) How Do Monks Survive At Low Levels?

I like the tactic of following up a ranged attack against a weak looking target with a Move In + Flurry of Blows to Kill + Move Out. I had not really considered that. I think you're also stating that you view the Mobile feat as a complete waste, which I don't at all agree with. Unless you...

    November's SAGE ADVICE Is Here!

That's a pretty common interpretation, but it's not RAW. The Sage Advice clarification is not so great for Assassins, but it's no surprise to many. A lot of people extrapolated this from the fact that a surprised creature gets to take Reactions after its turn passes in the first round, even...

D&D 5E (2014) [GUIDE] Dealing Death: Handbook of the True Assassin

Based on posts by Jeremy Crawford on Sage Advice, the Assassinate ability only kicks in if you beat your target's initiative in the surprise round, even if they are unaware of you when the combat starts. This makes the Alert feat almost gold for players that want the most out of this ability...

D&D 5E (2014) How Do Monks Survive At Low Levels?

:) I'm sure for most people, it's the latter. I imagine that the tough part is to convince the rest of the group not to cut you from the team while you're pupating. You probably want to emphasize your non-combat skills by volunteering for extra watches at night, policing up the camp, latrine...

D&D 5E (2014) How Do Monks Survive At Low Levels?

Thanks, Rhogar_Rarr. I love the idea of a levitating Air Genasi Monk. So the general consensus I'm hearing from most people is to focus on ranged attacks while seeking targets of opportunity that you can engage in melee without getting your butt handed to you. That seems like pretty sound advice!

D&D 5E (2014) How Do Monks Survive At Low Levels?

You make some fair points, but your stance on darting in and out of combat suggests that you view monks as tanks which they most certainly are not. The monk class is clearly designed as a skirmisher, not a tank. Trying to play a monk as a tank will almost certainly get you killed. Leave the...

D&D 5E (2014) 'The Paladin as King': Cutting Through the Hype

I know I saw a sequence of posts somewhere about picking up the Shillelagh cantrip to help ease up on paladin MAD. I don't quite remember the conclusion of that debate. Doing so would cost you an ASI for Magic Initiate, of course, but that might be worth it if you prefer to play a paladin with...

D&D 5E (2014) How Do Monks Survive At Low Levels?

I take it from your use of the word "shouldn't" that you haven't actually played a low-level monk. If I'm mistaken, please tell me what sorts of tactics you used to survive during low-level play. Were you a variant human with the Mobile feat? If not, did you hang back and use ranged weapons...

D&D 5E (2014) How Do Monks Survive At Low Levels?

I tend to assume that the standard point-buy system is being used in all of the games I play, Hemlock. You are, of course, correct--with above average rolls, a monk can start with an AC above 16, which would help to mitigate some of the squishiness at low levels.

D&D 5E (2014) How Do Monks Survive At Low Levels?

It seems to me that you're just handwaving the whole squishiness issue away by declaring that "monks are fine 'coz they get Stunning Hand at level 5". It's not a good argument. To reach level 5, monks have to survive the levels which precede it, and they are quite weak at those levels thanks...

D&D 5E (2014) How Do Monks Survive At Low Levels?

Thanks, mellored. I agree that Moon Druids are OP at low levels of play. Would you go Monk 1 / Moon Druid 2 / Monk X for a build like this? I think a major turning point for Monks is access to the Mobility feat at level 4 (or 1 for Variant Humans), since this allows them to dart in and out of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Best Parts of SCAG

I really like the new Backgrounds. In particular, I like the City Watch and Mercenary Veteran backgrounds as flavorful alternatives to the Soldier background, but with features that are more likely to factor into everyday situations. I also like the Urban Bounty Hunter background as an...

D&D 5E (2014) How Do Monks Survive At Low Levels?

No denying that monk damage output lags significantly in ranged combat though. No archery fighting style, no sneak attack, no hunter's mark, etc.
