Sneak Attack Damage and Critical Hits

The bolded portion is the part that I think is most relevant here. The best way to think of it is that if the extra damage is gained because of the crit, then it must be roll. If it's part of the attack, then it's maximized. Hunter's Quarry, Sneak Attack, Curse, etc...all of these are a part...

'First Attack Roll of the Round'

Well, with sneak attack it doesn't work on the first roll, but it only works once per round. So yes, most of the time it will be the first roll, but it's just as easy for the Rogue to roll one attack, miss, and then burn an action point to attack again, hit, and apply his sneak attack damage.

Can you get too much healing?

Well, that's what Dailies are for. I don't view them as an "easy", but rather as a "OMG, this is going bad" button. Granted, the Wizard had to burn Flaming Sphere, but hopefully in a future encounter other PC's will have Dailies to help you out in bad situations.

    Standing Up From Prone

You'd have to wait until 21st level to get Knockback Swing (which is what I assume you're talking about), but yeah, it would mean that someone next to a Fighter will never get up again because they'll get knocked prone on the OA whether it hits or misses. If they also go with Polearm Master...

    D&D 4E 4E Dragons - Where's the beef?

Yeah, now that you've explained the PC's resource usage and health prior to the Dragon, I'm not surprised they were able to win. They really weren't in that bad of shape. Two PC's bloodied isn't too bad off, since a single heal can restore at least 1/4 of their HP, up to possibly 1/2. I can...

Can you get too much healing?

I guess the major flaw I see in CapnZapp's argument is that it's only running out of surges that can endanger or kill a player. In the game I play, we've come very close to losing players on a couple occasions, but it was never because of low surges. The lowest we've ever gone was with me, the...

    D&D 4E 4E Dragons - Where's the beef?

Not necessarily. My party wiped the floor with Irontooth, which was supposedly one the hardest encounters in KotS. We had missed out on the short rest from the previous encounter when we went up against him, and had used a lot of our encounter powers up. We still won though, but it was mostly...

    D&D 4E 4E Dragons - Where's the beef?

Totally agree with this. You don't really have a whole lot of room to complain about how the out of the book Dragon should be better when you're going AGAINST the book that says it was never designed for an encounter with PC's 12 levels lower than it.

Beastmaster Ranger / Beast Protector / Sharpshooter Paragon Path

That wasn't the intent, but I suppose by RAW it could work. Check with your DM to see if he'd allow it. Personally, I'm surprised that this hasn't been errata'd yet, since people have been trying various ways to use Beast Protector to make ranged OA's from across the battlefield practically...

Can you get too much healing?

Just as an experiment, perhaps you should a one-off sometime to see how stringing together 3-5 encounters works for you PC's. You can even tell them ahead of time. Something like say, their PC's have been captured and imprisoned, but create a skill challenge that allows them to get out and get...

Making effective use of the Bard's Multiclass Mastery

Just a quick note on multiclassing to get Sneak Attack. Yes, it only works with certain weapon groups, but the Rapier isn't a bad weapon and qualifies as a Light Blade. When you're adding 3d6 (Sneak Attack + Quarry) to that once per encounter that's a nice little damage boost. Also, while the...

    Defeating my powergamer Glave master

Yeah, wait until I hit Epic after taking the Inner Dragon PP. Up to 3 Breath Weapon attacks per encounter (one as a free action when I'm first bloodied, and another if I spend an action point while bloodied), each of which deals ongoing damage and gives me a damage bonus on my next attack...

    Defeating my powergamer Glave master

Don't need to. I'm a Fighter, remember? Anyone I attack with any ability, including Dragon Breath, will make on a hit or miss. So whoever doesn't die is already marked.

    Defeating my powergamer Glave master

Well, more accurately, Pally's are really good at tying up one high value target. Fighters, due to Combat Superiority, can hold down a larger area. Plus, the ability to mark multiple opponents, even though you can only hit one, is a strong disincentive because if you try to violate it you know...

Can you get too much healing?

Actually, there's an item in the AV that lets you do essentially that. It's a waist slot item called a Healer's Sash (p 166). As an At-Will you or an adjacent ally uses a Healing Surge but gains no benefit. This adds a charge to the sash. As an Immediate Reaction encounter power, when an...

Can you get too much healing?

I don't feel like responding to whole wall 'o text there, but this right here is at the core of the issue. No matter how much people multiclass, it only gives them a once per day healing power. So, if you have a party of 5 with 1 Cleric and 4 guys MCing to get a healing power, you have access...

Can you get too much healing?

Sure they are, provided you're not playing in game where failure = the world ends. Failure can simply mean that you fail to track down the bad guy and you'll face him again later. Or it can mean that you failed to get a certain powerful item (that would likely be added into a later treasure...

    Shaman AC too low?

That's actually a good observation. The Protector Shaman will generally want to keep his Spirit close to the rest of the party in order to provide bonuses to them. The Stalker Shaman, on the other hand, will generally want his Spirit to get mixed into the enemy lines in order to do more...

A (brief) rant about circular discussions

This is why I don't get those DM's who complain about one character being too powerful, then someone responds and says "attack their weak defense", only to have the DM say he shouldn't have to tool encounters to counter specific characters. It's ridiculous. Your DM is doing it right in that...

    Blazing Starfall

You have to look at the Sorcerer class as a whole to understand why Blazing Starfall makes sense. For example, on my Sorc I built for a one-off I have Arcane Spellfury (+1 to hit after landing an At-Will), and then Rimestorm and Poisonous Exhalation. Both of those attack FORT, and they give...
