Escalating CON saves to avoid the effects of exhaustion will solve this issue. We've had to push through the night once or twice and we dread those con saves even if the first one is only DC 7, 2nd DC 10, etc.

PHB classes are for the most part fine. We've played most all of them and have liked them. The one that stands out is the Beastmaster Ranger from the PHB, I'd avoid that one.

Everything has been played with Barbarian as the lowest character count. We think they are awesome, it's the role-play angle that keeps them played less.
