    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

In 5e subclasses don't have the necessary "space" to really deviate to far from the class. Hence why Battlemaster is still less complex than casters. Maybe in a future edition, sure.

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

I don't think there is a problem with having simple and complex classes. The problem is that it is also tied to character concept. You may be a big Harry Potter fan and want to play a "wizard" but dislike the complexity of spellcasters in DnD. Conversely, you may want some tactical decision...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

Yah, Bards are definitely the social kings. Rogues can be probably be about equal if they focus on it, but they have to balance it with Dex if they want to be effective in combat. Sorcerers and Paladins pretty much round out classes that can excel at it. Warlocks, being charisma based, can be up...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

I mean, it's a bit of a misnomer when the "complex" fighter is still simpler than the "simple" caster....

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

I think the pushback is because magic items/boons are very campaign dependent on how much control the player compared to a wizard being able to select a spell with their level up choices. While it could be a similar situation with the costly component for said spell, for a lot of people it makes...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

The exact scenario was no magic items/costly spell components. But regardless, the point I made before last post was that combat isn't the problem. Fighters can output high levels of damage. That isn't the issue. Especially if, in your own words, both characters can handle the encounter.

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

I was being diplomatic before, but this Planetar fight is so, so silly. 2 CR 16 creatures is a Deadly encounter for a single character. Just because a wizard can't win doesn't make the fighter, who is going to do just as badly, better.

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

I'm not sure a combat encounter is really the best test anyway. Martials are pretty decent in a fight, at least at doing single target damage and taking a few hits. It's that spellcasters are not slouches at contributing to combat themselves, and have ridiculous capabilities outside of combat...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

A valid question, and one that I'll admit can be tricky to answer. Off the top of my head I'd say spells enhancing physical combat seem fairly obvious to start, but even that eventually leads to things like Paladin smite spells, which fit for that character. Still, something like Tenser's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Martials v Casters...I still don't *get* it.

Everyone has their own take on the problem(or lack thereof). But for myself, I don't necessarily need martial abilities to do the same thing as spells. It would be nice if martial characters got some unique and flavorful abilities that felt as meaningful as some spells do that couldn't be easily...

Also, even if we assume for the sake of argument that Eldritch Knight and Arcane Tricksters are balanced with full casters and are an acceptable solution to the problem, you then have a problem that they are the only choice of subclass at that point. Choosing anything else is simply not a good...

D&D 5E (2014) Meet Ravenloft's Harkon Lucas and Rudolph Van Richten

I think the problem is that I have no clue what you are arguing. Your initial complaint was that the clothing worn by Harkon Lucas and Van Richten didn't match the faux medieval setting of D&D.

D&D 5E (2014) Meet Ravenloft's Harkon Lucas and Rudolph Van Richten

Dungeons and Dragons wants to be a generic ruleset that people can use for a multitude of fantasy style games. They are not going to pick a single aesthetic because D&D(or WotC more appropriately) doesn't want to have a single aesthetic. Specific settings might I suppose, but even their biggest...

D&D General Reading Ravenloft the setting

I myself don't tend to run multiple settings in my games either, but Ravenloft has done the mists grab adventurers for weekend in hell thing for awhile now from what I gather. So it's a bit late for that.

D&D General Reading Ravenloft the setting

My problem with the humancentric thing is that first, it's weird from a cosmology standpoint. I'm supposed to believe that the dark powers overwhelmingly only choose human evildoers and adventurers in a multiverse filled with other beings? The second is that it definitely feels like it is that...

D&D General Reading Ravenloft the setting

Their not getting rid of gothic horror from the setting. I mean, the first book revisiting the setting is Curse of Strahd. We know we're getting a Dr. Franken.... errr, Mordenheim. Almost certainly there is going to be a werewolf/wolfman domain. However they are, it seems, broadening the scope...

D&D General Reading Ravenloft the setting

This discussion all been pretty interesting to me, as someone who hasn't really ever got into Ravenloft before but is intrigued by a the upcoming book and running some more horror themed D&D games. It does feel like WotC wants to make some changes and broaden the focus of the setting. Your...

D&D 5E (2014) Is favored enemy and natural explorer really that bad?

Another thing I want to bring up is Primeval Awareness. In a Storm King's Thunder campaign I ran a player was playing a ranger, and we ultimately both found the ability kinda weak while simultaneously annoying. It detects your favored enemy within 1 mile/6 miles of you, but doesn't tell you...

D&D General I'm reading the Forgotten Realms Novels- #202 The Howling Delve by Jaleigh Johnson (Dungeons 2)

The monster form was actually an ability you got in the Baldur's Gate 2 game if I remember correctly, although as a story point it may not have been used well in the story, it has been a long time since I've read them.

Fun fact, in the original Tales of the Sword Coast expansion for BG 1, if you use the premade party the Bhaalspawn is a fighter named Abdel. Not sure if the story was made before it was released or vice versa though.
