D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

Honestly, for the champion I just gave prof/expertise in Acrobatics and Athletics in my houserule for Remarkable Athlete. If anything, in my opinion it's simpler than the default, which everyone says the champion is made to be.

Valda can feel the magic of the rune increasing her stature beginning to fade. With only a few more moments, she continues to hold on to the giant with one hand while her other hand, with the longsword, attacked the giant in front of her. +1 Longsword Attack Rolls: 1D20+9 = [4]+9 = 13 1D20+9 =...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

Well, that is the big question, isn't it? It's why why these conversations keep popping up I'd guess. I'll point out the the limitations of magic, or lack therof, are entirely arbitrary and intentional. Why can't a wizard in D&D heal? Because. In Shadowrun magic cannot teleport things. Why...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

You are making an assumption that balance was the reason 4e failed. While I'm not really interested in getting into an edition war, I'll briefly say that the most numerous complaint I've seen on 4e is that the feel of how the classes played made the game not feel like D&D. That is different than...

Or we could just not have one class be more powerful than the others? (Perfect Balance is probably unachievable, I know, I know. Doesn't mean we can't try to make things better. The enemy of the good is the perfect after all.)

It's the same level a wizard gets 5th level spells. Put a spell on the wizard list at that level that lasts 8 hours, and allows a single reroll of a failed saving throw during the duration. I don't see it being a popular choice.

Indomitable shouldn't count. It's absolutely awful. So bad I used it in a previous post about how badly it stacks up as a 9th level ability.

Might be hot take, but I don't have as big a problem with Forcecage compared to Wall of Force.

So, I like this answer, has some really good points. Other skills can be pretty useful in the social sphere. The knowledge skills are the big ones, and where wizards can definitely excel. That said, they are not particularly wizard exclusive, although the wizard's focus on intelligence means...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

So, I wanted to comment on the social pillar and spells. The wizard, in my opinion, is okay but not exceptional at the social pillar. This is because of two factors. The first has been brought up before, that most social based spells are charms and mind control. Both of these things have to be...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

The assertion that wizards being more powerful than everyone else makes the game more fun is certainly an interesting take. I'm not sure I agree with it personally. I can't see how it relates to the players(and DM I guess) and their enjoyment of the game.

All this talk of gishes, and I usually avoid discussing the topic since I know I'm a bit biased on the subject. The Bladesinger is something that is part of the identity of D&D, and yet man, I could definitely do without personally.

Valda heaves the doors open and rushes the giant. Having stowed her shield on her back before the assault, she attempts to get a hold on the giant before going in for a stab with her drawn sword. Athletics to Grapple: 2D20.HIGH(1)+8 = [14, 1]+8 = 22 +1 Longsword Attack Rolls: 1D20+9 = [11]+9...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

I do think separating combat from our discussion for the moment is a good idea. On jump, I think it does actually connect to stalling, in a sense. Let me try to elaborate. At 1st level, our fighter has 16 strength, and by the rules can jump 16 feet(with a running start). At 4th level, this...

I agree. In this specific game however, I think the wizard got a jackpot though in terms of items.

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

I dunno. I've played in a game with a high level wizard. He was definitely the big gun of solving issues, even compared to my cleric and the druid in the party. I will note that magic items probably favored the wizard, although the druid had a really powerful boon granted by an archfey, so it...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

But isn't that the issue? Low level Wizards and low level fighters coexist pretty well. It's at high levels that the fighter stalls and the wizard only gets even more powerful.

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

There are some abilities that are useful to double up on. Damage is a good example. But sure, I would agree that certain abilities don't need to be doubled up on. I'm not sure movement is one I would personally agree with. Jump may not be prime wizard real estate, but Misty Step is a nice one...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

Probably none. I mostly brought it up to illustrate a point. That while a wizard could beat the Champion at it's own game, but it's considered a subpar option for the wizard to do so. Which means that the Champion's jumping ability isn't strong, it's just the only option they have.

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

I mean, that is kinda the problem though. An 18th level Wizard can have Jump as an at will spell and so becomes better than the guy we would expect to be the physical athlete. The fact that most people would call that a poor use of the ability doesn't really make the Champion better. Consider...
