A discussion of Keith Baker's post regarding the Skill Challenge system

Always nice to have the word from the cow's mouth, Mr. Keith. ;) Nice post btw, with nice "explanation" of your views and DM fiats.

What happens with reliable multi-target powers?

Makes it an "all or nothing" type of an attack, which means "Reliable" is not a type to the power.

What happens with reliable multi-target powers?

For those of you who are trying to argue the wording, here are your choices, if an AoE Reliable power misses even one target: 1) The power is not expended, so thus NO hits that the power "triggered" happen either. Since the power is not expended it can not exert any "force" on the world. 2)...

    Role Features... Controller left out?

Their "role feature" is the vast array of Burst 2, 3, 4, and 5 powers they have, both ranged and close versions. Whether the Wizard wants DoT or Spike damage is up to them, and of course there are the non/less damaging "environmental/terrain control" AOE's as well.

    Options and Multiclassing...

I just ruled that for the Paragon Multiclassing "choice" the character gets an additional feat choice at each Paragon Power level. This "gives back" the 3 "wasted" feats to get into the PMC and it also helps "even out" the power of a PMC compared to a regular Paragon Class.

    Adding Templates to Solos?

They work quite well actually, just takes a little compare/contrast to accomplish. Scion of Flame Adult Red Dragon (Level 19 Solo Soldier/Controller 12,000) hp: 900ish (8*level + Con), AC 37, Fort 36, Ref 33, Will 32 add +2 to all attacks. Can turn it's Frightful Presence into a Fire, Fear...

    First Strike vs. Alertness

Given First Strike, wouldn't he get Sneak Attack in both the Surprise Round and the First Round if he wins initiative? (Don't have books on me atm)

    D&D 4E Classless 4e

I don't think you can have it both ways, if you want the default classes then you have to give up variety of features/powers. If you want variety of features/powers then you have to give up variety in what makes the classes different. Looks to me like you want "one man armies", and what you...

Out of Healing Surges - what now?

Not knowing the specific adventure, nor how far the PC's are in it, I think I would simply take the number of potions, divide them by the number in the party and then have that many potions be "special" healing potions which grant a healing surge, but no healing itself. Also, you stated that at...

    Masterwork armor doubts

I haven't decided if that is bad or not yet. I tend to run campaigns where the PC's "level up" their gear, rather than go and keep swapping it out wholesale. Of course my "easy solution" is to do nothing, it is the price one pays for having mortal made gear as a base. It simply "costs" more...

    Masterwork armor doubts

mcrow, according to the PHB FAQ, +4 Leather cannot exist, to get +4 it needs to be Feywild, likewise neither leather nor Feywild can hold a +6 enhancement, only Starleather can hold it. I disagree with the FAQ and have already houseruled that enhancement bonuses and material types are not...

    Poiint buy arrays and

Jack of all trades or Master of One becomes the question. Depending on Class you can "easily" favour 3 attributes over the other 3, since you will use the 3 "step children" attributes almost never (unless you choose to skill away from your strengths) use them their bonuses really don't count...

Is the 'Sweet Spot' really there?

After level 6 when you pick up your second utility power it seems like the "sweet spot" is reached. Before that you are "getting into" powers, granted, it is new and as we all learn the nuances of the game some of that will wear off, but it seems like before level 6 your overall options are...

    Some questions from actual play

Spatula, of course there are 0[W] powers in there, they simply adhere to shorthand convention and don't include values which result in 0. As far as cleave, Notice it says HIT, you then have two targets, you can choose either target to apply the flaming weapon daily, since you HIT. Also using...

    Some questions from actual play

Umm Boar, sorry if you are mathematically challenged, but 0[W] is a roll, like it or not. I roll 1d8 multiply the result by 0 and then add modifiers, it is a mathematically sound calculation. And in 4e shorthand the expression would be +(Ability) modifier damage. Like I stated above though...

    Rolling initiative in groups?

I've used the rolling by type mechanic for years. All the grunts go on this roll, the leader types get their own rolls. Your basic "goal" should be to not roll anymore Init rolls than the player's do. So if you have 5 players the DM shouldn't roll more than 5 Init rolls. Less is fine...

    Some questions from actual play

And damage that is done by Cleave is essentially 0[W]+Str. It makes no sense that a magic weapon doesn't add it's enhancement bonus everytime it does damage, it is only partially magic? Likewise, if you have weapon focus, you are only partially focused? The difference with minions is nil...

    Dewl barsturd swordz yo!

Your cookie, but perhaps have it so that Versatile weapons are not able to be wielded in the off hand. It really makes no difference though, not sure why I can't wield a 5lb weapon in my offhand, but I can wield a 25lb shield...

    D&D 4E hex rules for 4E?

You should never have half hexes, simply never draw a line between two opposite corners and or midpoints of a side. So a line could go from corner 1-2 or 1-3 or 1-5 or 1-6, but never 1-4. That way all hexes are either less than half or more than half. Just remember that you are "nerfing" the...
