    D&D 5E (2014) Leomund's Ultimate Fortification

It is a potent spell (as a 3rd level spell should be), but there are a couple of mitigating factors. You actually can't shoot out of it. You can leave it and re-enter, but you have to expose yourself to do so. If the caster leaves, the dome fails. Magic can't be cast through it in either...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ranger

In my Tyranny of Dragons playtest, the ranger had the highest damage output of the whole group. She was reliably hitting for lots of damage, right up until a dragon ate her. It was a TPK, mind you, against a wildly superior foe... The new PCs have a ranger too (different player), and she's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fun With 5th Edition D&D in Retail Sales

A customer was telling me about a camera that fell into the water, but he dried it out and it was fine. I replied, "Yeah, it's when people try and turn it on right away when it's all wet, that's where you take lightning damage." :) Followed it up with "Cameras are not aquatic creatures."

D&D 5E (2014) grabbed the PHB at lunch - art is really great

I love the picture of the two bards deciphering the script on a stone. It makes me want to know more about what's going on in that game.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fun With 5th Edition D&D in Retail Sales

Some of you may recall my previous thread on this subject... http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?316872-Fun-with-D-amp-D-in-Retail-Sales! I work retail in an electronics department, and every now and then I try to see how many D&D terms I can slip into regular sales conversations with...

D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen (D&D Encounters version)

It's a sacred cow that I wouldn't dare to touch, where I designing D&D. The color-coded dragons are just too iconic. I like to have a little variance in draconic attitudes (not all reds are proud to a fault, for instance), but I like having an archetype to deviate from (or play up).

D&D 5E (2014) What are you going to keep from previous editions/other d20 games?

I will be keeping the 'bloodied' designation from 4th Edition. I write monster damage taken on the battlemat, and when they become bloodied, I use a red pen. That way my players can see at a glance whether or not they're making progress.

A gift for you all: The 5e Spell Sorter!

This is it. The first, truly great player's aid for D&D. I know I'll be getting a lot of use out of the 'sort by schools' functionality. I was just putting together a villain in my Tyranny of Dragons playtest and I had to try and track down some abjuration spells of a particular level...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone have the book yet?

Yes... I've got one pre-ordered at your store. Any chance of a midnight launch? :D I laughed. Then I tried to xp you, but I was eaten by a grue. Also deserving of xp. But I simply can't. Something about spreading it around first... I'll be seeing you at PAX sir. Can't wait. I'll just...

    D&D 5E (2014) Homebrew Campaigns in 5e

I ran a campaign during the public playtest. It was a gothic horror game, set in a valley where the rain started to fall ten years ago, and it hasn't stopped. Shamelessly, I'm going to show off my map below. http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?336944-Gothic-Horror-In-The-Rain As for...

    D&D 5E (2014) AC 25+

I had two different players at two different tables try to stack the barbarian defense with mage armor. I think it's going to be a common mis-reading of the rules. WotC should have a quick 'FAQ' style document about "These Combos Don't Stack".

    D&D 5E (2014) This Game is Deadly

That, in particular, has been responsible for a few PC deaths in my playtest games. Especially from AoEs that function every round. With monster damage scaling the way it does, the damage amount would also have to scale. Otherwise, you'd be rolling this save a few times every fight around...

D&D 5E (2014) NPCs Along for the Ride

In my games, I'll usually handle this with an NPC. They aren't a full-fledged member of the party, and their interests often differ greatly from the actual PCs. A paid hireling, for instance, is great for extra muscle. A cleric might be along on the condition that he gets to take any...

    D&D 5E (2014) Second guessing WOTC

I wonder if WotC is deliberately holding back on the push for big box retailers until the core rulebooks are out? At least, maybe they're waiting until there are monsters and DM advice available as part of basic. That way when someone sees it at Target, goes online to check out the character...

D&D 5E (2014) TIAMAT! It's that gargantuan mini we've all been waiting to see!

I think you'll really like Tyranny of Dragons. My playtest group does. Plenty of excellent stuff in there. I feel the same way. Most of those dragons look really bland and cheap, and only Bahamut looks like any sort of impressive. And I actually thought it was a blue dragon until I came to...

D&D 5E (2014) Playing with the short rest mechanic

Through lots of playtesting, I have really come to appreciate the one hour short rest. It becomes a real tactical choice whether or not to rest, and just as often as not, the PCs have decided they couldn't risk it and pressed on instead. I don't think that twenty minutes versus one hour would...

D&D 5E (2014) Using Inspiration to Perform Stunts!

I only have one quibble; some classes rely on bonus actions much more heavily than others. I agree that there ought to be an action cost of some kind, but I'm not sure bonus action is the best fit. I'm not sure what to recommend otherwise. I like the idea that inspiration can have a combat...

    D&D 5E (2014) Basic already surprising us.

On average, if you're acting faster than the rest of the party, it can be flavorful. Makes your character feel battle-ready and quick to realize when swords are needed. The reverse can also be true. We have a character in our game who routinely goes last. His character has become known as...

D&D 5E (2014) Wait, what IS the point of Acrobatics?

Acrobatics is also heavily involved with avoiding grapples and trips, for instance. It's how you avoid those things with dexterity. I expect it'll be a skill that comes up a fair bit in adventures as a 'stay on the tilting platform instead of falling into lava' type thing. For anyone not...
