D&D 5E (2014) If it fails, this is one reason why...

I still think this is what we'll end up with. 1st Edition tables can pick up the 'Basic Game' (no subclasses, no feats, etc), while 3rd Edition tables could pick the 'skill points' module and the option to cherry pick subclass features. I think you're showing the problem with your own...

    Anyone tried no offensive spellcasting?

I once created a halfling wizard who eschewed evocation. It wasn't the lack of combat spells that was the trouble (he did have color spray and the like), it was the fact that light was an evocation spell. That was obnoxious.

D&D 5E (2014) Signs & Portents (that we can read into) about the ETA of 5E

It's a tough call, whether to rush for a 2014 release or not. We don't know the state of the rules, we don't know if they're 50% done or 95% done right now. So this whole post is just speculation. But for the sake of argument, let's say they're about 50-60% done. If they rush the ruleset for...

D&D 5E (2014) Signs & Portents (that we can read into) about the ETA of 5E

Nah, not quite. I'm talking a 'Beginner's Set' then a 'Standard Set'. Not separated by years, but instead by 6 months or so. Put 5th Edition out for Christmas 2014, and tweak anything that needs to be tweaked. That way we won't need a D&D 5.5.

D&D 5E (2014) Signs & Portents (that we can read into) about the ETA of 5E

I'll echo the sentiment; I hope they do an early, beta release and then use feedback from that to tweak the full ruleset. There is testing ongoing, of that I have no doubt. They're sending out different pieces of the rules to their alpha playtesters, and there's still ongoing tweaks. But the...

D&D 5E (2014) Do We Need Another "Damage On A Miss" Poll?

I didn't realize it was a necro either. Funny how eerily appropriate this thread was. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Is DnD next chasing a pipedream?

Thread necromancy! Casting time: 9 months.

ICv2 has D&D in third place after Star Wars

I'm surprised with the deck building games that Dominion has fallen to #8...

D&D 5E (2014) Official D&D Next adventure VAULT OF THE DRACOLICH now available!

One of the things I really love about Vault of the Dracolich; it has a player map. You have a map of the dungeon scrawled by past adventurers with notations about monsters and threats they encountered along the way many years ago. The inaccuracies (deliberate), the remarks scrawled in the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing Surges and 5E

This. If you want to make these function like 'healing surges', it's easily fixed; just maximize all dice rolls for hit dice. If you're referring to the way healing spells interacted with surges in 4th Edition, you may have a little more work on your hands to house-rule that in.

D&D 5E (2014) Official D&D Next adventure VAULT OF THE DRACOLICH now available!

I haven't run it or played it that way, but I imagine it would be just fine. But you'd be missing part of the magic. I think it would play about the same as any regular dungeon crawl module. For best effect, I'd run a group of NPC adventurers behind the curtain, and have them communicate with...

D&D 5E (2014) Official D&D Next adventure VAULT OF THE DRACOLICH now available!

I'm stoked for this. Vault of the Dracolich was the coolest organized play event I ever had the pleasure to play. :)

Serious question - are you going to invest in D&DNext?

It depresses me that there are so many responses of "No" or "Meh". I've run a few 5th Edition campaigns with my group, and it's been some of the best gaming we've had. My experience with the ruleset has me excited to dive into it in greater detail when the core books come out. DM'ing has been...

    D&D 5E (2014) Will I like D&D Next?

I would agree with that. Mistwell mostly hit the nail on the head. The boss battle thing is probably the hardest part of D&D Next, since the monsters don't often have the staying power to be a persistent threat through a long battle. That said, try looking up the legendary black dragon...

D&D 5E (2014) Skills - Does anyone actually like the way they're headed?

I quite like it. I appreciate that the fighter has a chance to know what a magical rune is; it gives the character a reason to roll. It allows for moments where the wizard is stumped and the fighter squints, tilts his head, then says, "Isn't that ancient infernal? I... er... saw the runes on...

D&D 4E What I miss about 4e (my preferences of course)

For what it's worth, there are some big baddies coming down the pipeline who will interact like that. Legendary monsters are still in the early phase of development, but they look like they'll provide a nix mix of narrative badassery and combat tactics...

    D&D 5E (2014) Druids and shape changing – I don't like it!!

I've read (and quite enjoyed) Stross and Sanderson. I can't think of anything in their books that made me think they were RPG-derived... quite the opposite, in fact. Sanderson's "Way of Kings" series is a really different take on a fantasy world; built from the ground up to be very different...

D&D 5E (2014) I guess Jon Schindehette out. Bad news for D&D NEXT?

I think the almost-immediate announcement of Numenera is some pretty strong evidence on that one. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Rosemary's Baby

Klaus hit the meat of the argument, in that demons were more focused on destruction while devils were more about corruption. The other part of it, I think, is that devils tended to have more humanoid forms, while demons are all over the map. Personally, I like the idea of them acting as a...
