D&D General Why the Great Thief Debate Will Always Be With Us

I'm not attacking 5E specifically, but I'm using rules in this case as shorthand for saying that a class has mechanical support. At some base level every class has some mechanical support, but I'm concerned mostly with what makes one class different from another. The jump thing was only an...

D&D General Why the Great Thief Debate Will Always Be With Us

Rules are the foundation for freedom. If you have rules, you know your capabilities and you are free. Without rules you are ignorant of your own skills. There is no opposition between roleplaying and rules. This is, in my opinion, the premise behind the martial/caster debate. The reason why...

    D&D 5E (2024) Warcaster Cheesy Fondue 2024

It could be intentional, but it's also really weird. I mean think about it, the thing it enables is something clearly unique and not something I have seen anywhere else in D&D. I haven't seen this possible in any other system either except maybe if you use prepared actions in 3.0, 3.5 or PF1...

    D&D 5E (2024) Warcaster Cheesy Fondue 2024

Seems like unintended and clearly not RAI. I would not permit it as a GM.

D&D 5E (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

I doubt the bolded part. The people I saw introduced to 4E got into it much quicker than they did 3E.

D&D 5E (2024) Not loving weapon mastery with beginners

The obvious solution to all these complaints is to properly streamline the system. Make it so that absolutely nothing can modify or alter the standard basic "attack" move of every character. Things can add to it passively and unconditionally, and no options and no riders. Then add side...

D&D General Normal Distribution Ability Scores

Inspired by your use of d2s I invented this method below that I am convinced shall satisfy even hardcore dice-skeptics. 15d1 14d1 13d1 12d1 10d1 8d1 Assign in any order.

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

There are other concerns with running away. Turn order. In order to run away you need to get away from your opponents, and as JG says above, that might not be easy to do with the way movement works. To make matters worse, initiative also becomes a problem. It's very easy for someone to be...

D&D General Time Machine and a New D&D.

It would look fairly similar except it wouldn't at all, probably... No ability scores. Everything you can do depends on your class No spell slots, seriously they're a bad idea and should never have been a thing Hit points should scale slower, but you should start with more of them Martials...

    Silent Hill: Dante's Quest

I just want to point you in the direction of the RPG called Quietus, which might be more suitable for a horror-adventure. It might not be right for your group, though.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

I think the amount of time taken by casting spells so completely dominates that making anything non-magical take more time isn't going to be noticeable.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Spell Changes

It's limited only in a very abstract sense, and at mid to higher levels it is functionally at-will.

Do you need or prefer physical dice when playing?

A tactile feeling is important to me, but I don't mind playing online. If I play in person I pretty much require real dice, though. I prefer small metal dice, because I like the weight. Light dice are the worst.

D&D General I'm a Creep, I'm a Powergamer: How Power Creep Inevitably Destroys Editions

Monsters being built like PCs is great in theory, but it's sooooo much work in practice. I personally love the idea of it, but man I do not feel like it works well when you sit down to play. Too much prep.

D&D General I'm a Creep, I'm a Powergamer: How Power Creep Inevitably Destroys Editions

As the age of a D&D edition approaches infinity, the number of spells available approaches infinity The only way to avoid power creep in D&D is to avoid having generalised features. That is: Any feature that belongs to a class belongs to that class only, and later books cannot add new...

D&D 5E (2024) How many of you would implement the drop to 0 HP, get 1 level of exhaustion house rule?

I dislike the whole exhaustion system because it doesn't really punish characters equally. I'm not even objecting to this because it is unbalanced, but because I think it's aesthetically bad. It has an important problem: It doesn't really inhibit spell casting. A caster can have multiple levels...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

I have to admit i was wrong. My perspective in this case comes from being mostly on the player side of 5E, and never having the sense that anything in the survival side of the system was anything but arbitrary GM fiat.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:
