    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

This can get into weird territory real fast. Trying to design, for example, character trials it's difficult to design trials that cannot be trivially bypassed by a wizard (even if the trial is not intended for casters). Because the only limitation magic has is anti-magic (which is another form...

    Everyone should play Nobilis, really

That particular case makes more sense if you imagine using it against npcs. You could completely kill a comedic stage play, for example, by using that. Or ruining a joke told by some character to lighten up the mood. Note that things that might sound niche from a D&D perspective are not niche...

    Everyone should play Nobilis, really

That's a cool idea. I might actually attempt to start up a campaign next year. I'll need to research how to manage forum rpgs. Never done it before.

    Everyone should play Nobilis, really

Yeah the art in first and second edition is amazing. I think it very much depends on the characters the players make. The story I am currently running as a GM is fairly serious, for example, but I imagine the tone can vary a lot based on such factors (and GM style, of course). I have the same...

    Everyone should play Nobilis, really

Nobilis is a weird RPG currently on its third edition, though this post mainly concerns the second edition which is the only edition I have experience with. If there was a Sandman RPG, that game would be like Nobilis. The Setting There is a secret war between creation itself and malevolent...

    D&D General better dark elves?

lol that's what I get for not reading any of the 5e monster manual stuff I guess

    D&D General better dark elves?

You could change it so that the problems with the drow are more cultural rather than "inherent" or whatever. Instead of having every drow individually being a dick, have drow society be a mix of good and bad individuals stuck in a bad system. This also seems more realistic.

D&D General What does the mundane high level fighter look like? [+]

It's also worth, imo, thinking about a related question: What does a high level non-magical villain look like? What is the fighter version of the wizard. What is the fighter version of a lich? A high level solo enemy.

Pathfinder 2E PF2 Remaster PDFs have been sent out! Talk about/ask questions about them here.

I've heard news that apparently they've changed how wounds work in relation to when you take damage while dying. Any information on this?

D&D General Requesting permission to have something cool

The title was a mistake which I should have fixed before posting. The title doesn't focus on the intent of my post. I don't want to change it now because it would just create more confusion, and I don't even know if I can do it. A better title would have focused on the main idea of the post...

    AD&D 2E Let's Read the AD&D 2nd Edition PHB+DMG!

Can't just leave us hanging. What happens? What does the example GM do? :D

D&D General Requesting permission to have something cool

Just like they did in 4E, except I don't remember any discussion from that era where people complained about issues with martials being weak or underpowered. I'd say that fighters and wizards are both difficult but for completely different reasons. You fumble a wizard by not knowing which...

D&D General Requesting permission to have something cool

Aesthetics. People are trying to frame this thing as if it about some unhinged thirst for power or whatever, but what people want is for the classes to be more balanced so that they don't feel like sidekicks if they pick the "wrong" archetype. I retired my previous fighter because I got into...

D&D General Requesting permission to have something cool

I made it a separate thread because I wanted to focus on the underlying idea rather than as a discussion of balance itself. It's not so much about balance but whether or not a big part of the conflict is based on the idea that how people experience a particular class or character is a result of...

D&D General Requesting permission to have something cool

That's fine. I'm not sure I'm convinced of it myself. The idea came to me after some group talk while playing PF2. We were discussing what things we'd get at higher levels, and I realised the whole "feel" of knowing that things will be available in the future wasn't there in the rather...

D&D General The Importance of Verisimilitude (or "Why you don't need realism to keep it real")

I haven't played it since the 90s so I don't know if anything major has changed, but it's definitely not a system without issues. The combat rules are pretty cool, though. Armour is subtractive armour (like Damage Reduction from D&D) and there's no AC. Instead you roll a weapon skill check to...

D&D General Requesting permission to have something cool

I don't see how what I'm doing is saying what peoples experiences are or will be at all. I'm trying to understand why people have been objecting to high level mythic martial abilities even in cases where they themselves admitted they never play at that level anyway. And I realised when I was...

D&D General Requesting permission to have something cool

I agree that my two groups are not exhaustive, but it's certainly not a false dilemma. I should have perhaps have said something to make it clear that there are indeed more opinions than just those two. Your damage example is a good example of something cool, but it's also functionally just an...

D&D General Requesting permission to have something cool

Yeah that's the kind of stuff I want to see at higher levels Subclasses at level 1 and a few more levels dedicated to subclass abilities would be great.

D&D General The Importance of Verisimilitude (or "Why you don't need realism to keep it real")

Torchbearer sounds pretty amazing. I've been trying to figure out the rules for a while but they're so different from other systems I've played. Other systems that handle this issue with magic differently: Drakar och Demoner, a very dnd-inspired old Swedish rpg makes extensive use of skills...
